Ultimate Lucky Student, called Super High School Level Good Luck (超高校級の「幸運」chō kōkō kyū no “kōun”) in the Japanese version, is a title given to multiple people featured in the Hope's Peak Academy Saga of the Danganronpa series.
The Ultimate Lucky Student is a talent held by two known people, Makoto Naegi and Nagito Komaeda. Unlike most Ultimates, who are selected for their demonstrated proficiency in their talent, this "talent" is given in a annual countrywide draw for enrollment at Hope's Peak Academy - the title reflects the selected student's "luck" in being chosen to attend the prestigious academy's Main Course without necessarily having an extraordinary talent.
In Makoto Naegi Secret File, it was revealed that an unnamed girl was set to be the Ultimate Lucky Student of Class 78th, but her letter was destroyed by a series of events accidentally set off by Makoto. The draw was then redone, and Makoto was randomly selected to be Class 78th's Ultimate Lucky Student.
Skills and Abilities
Being ordinary people who received their title through random draw, Ultimate Lucky Students usually don't show any abnormal talents. Both Makoto and Nagito have shown signs of possessing supernatural luck, but they experience it in different ways. Makoto often appears to have bad luck, but this does not usually affect his life and has at times benefited him; for example, in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Makoto's bathroom door doesn't fit in the doorframe correctly and often gets stuck. This fact proved to be a crucial factor in exonerating Makoto of murder, proving to be a lucky occurrence for him. Despite Makoto apparently experiencing bad luck, the outcome generally is favorable for him.
On the other hand, Nagito's luck has affected him significantly, his luck being a cycle of good and bad luck which has greatly affected his life and outlook. Unlike Makoto, Nagito seems to experience bouts of both extreme good luck and extreme bad luck; whenever something fortunate happens to him, something equally unfortunate tends to happen soon after. This has led Nagito to develop a very twisted sense of self; he has a very low opinion of himself, since he doesn't have an actual talent, but he trusts his luck to see him through all kinds of difficult situations, even life-threatening situations. Nagito has even been able to use his luck to his advantage on occasion, as shown during the first trial and the fifth trial of the Killing School Trip.
