Even a strange, childish little boy like you might stumble on some bittersweet love if you're lucky!

Monokuma to Makoto Naegi, School Mode

School Mode (スクールモード Sukūrumōdo), also known as its full title Enchanting Dangan Academy ~Purely Prismatic Souls~, is a bonus mode unlocked after beating Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, specifically from the re-release bundle Danganronpa 1.2 Reload, for the PlayStation Vita, PC, and PlayStation 4.

Similar to Island Mode in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Love Across the Universe: Dangan Salmon Team in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, the bonus mode serves as a dating sim, leading the player through a version of the main plot where there are no mutual killings.

School Mode Start
The game starts out identically to the beginning of the main story, where Makoto Naegi enters the school and passes out. However, Makoto does not wake up in an empty classroom and instead wakes up at the sealed exit room along with some of the other students. After briefly discussing their situation, the group leaves towards the gym, where they meet with the rest of the students and Monokuma.

School Mode Backups
Once there, Monokuma makes an identical announcement as he does in the main story, however he declares that he is currently at a loss on what to do since he has forgotten to create "backups" for himself, and therefore cannot truly begin the group's "School Life". Although all the students are confused and reluctant to go along with Monokuma's words, he reminds the group that the door is sealed and that there is currently no way to leave. Monokuma then announces that in order to escape, the students must work together to create backups based on his specifications. After he leaves, the students all reluctantly agree to go along with Monokuma's orders since there was no telling what could happen if they refuse.

Guide Project Makoto 07
The massive high school towers over all the other buildings in this bustling urban area. It's like the school stands at the center of the entire world.
Guide Project Makoto 03
Hope's Peak Academy... It brings in top students from every field imaginable. A government-funded school of privilege... They say that if you come here and manage to graduate, you'll be set for life. With hundreds of years of tradition, it sends the cream of the crop into the work force every year. It was built to raise hope in the nation's future. Which makes Hope's Peak a pretty fitting name.
Guide Project Makoto 11
There are two things you need to attend this school... One, you have to already be attending high school. Two, you have to be the very best at what you do. No ordinary student could enroll here. The only way in is if you're scouted by the school itself. And standing there at the gate of the ultimate school filled with the ultimate students...
Guide Project Makoto 01
...was me. But I can't just stand around here in front of the school forever, right? New students are supposed to meet in the main hall at 8 a.m That's not for a little while, but... I should probably just head in. Yeah... Yeah, let's do this!
Guide Project Makoto 23
I gathered up all my determination and tried to act like I'd done this a million times before. And I took my first step toward the main hall... But...
Guide Project Makoto 18
...Huh!? As soon as I stepped foot into the main hall, my view became warped, twisted. It was like some kind of delusion, melting away and mixing together into something else. Spinning, mixing, melting away, then spinning again... And then...
Guide Project Sayaka 9
Makoto? Are you okay?
Guide Project Makoto 04
Guide Project Junko Disguise 08
What, were you trying to escape into your own reality? It's not like any of us know what's going on, either.
Guide Project Makoto 05
Oh, umm... Sorry.
Guide Project Sakura 04
There's no need to apologize. Given the situation, it's understandable.
Guide Project Makoto 12
That's right... For some reason, I went unconscious as soon as I stepped into the main hall. And when I woke up, I was in a classroom. The windows were all blocked off by these weird metal plates. But it wasn't just the classroom. As it turns out... All of us who'd gathered there had had all our stuff taken away, and we were locked inside the school. As we stood around, an announcement came on asking us come to the gym for the entrance ceremony. But hearing that voice made it hard for me to concentrate on what it was actually saying... Hey, where are the others? Wasn't everyone here earlier...?
Guide Project Mondo 08
Everyone else went to the gym while your ass was knocked out.
Guide Project Hifumi 20
But is it really a good idea to obey such a strange announcement?
Guide Project Junko Disguise 08
Yeah, it was weird as hell. But what else are we supposed to do?
Guide Project Kyoko 05
She's right. Whatever's going to happen, standing our ground here isn't going to stop it.
Guide Project Kiyotaka 07
Okay, then let's head to the gym! Makoto, are you good to go?
Guide Project Makoto 08
Y-Yeah... I was forced to wonder, what the hell was going on here...? I was tormented by a dark feeling of foreboding, but I did my best to ignore it and hurried to the gym. And as soon as I entered, a weirdly cheery voice echoed across the room.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
Hey there, howdy, hello! Is everyone here? Good! Then let's get things rolling!! And I am this school's headmaster! Nice to meet you all!
Guide Project Makoto 16
Such a bright voice and carefree attitude was completely out of place.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 06
...Ahh, can't do it. It just can't be done!
Guide Project Makoto 08
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
This entrance ceremony was supposed to be your chance to make your big high school debut! As the headmaster, I did my best to put on a happy face, but... It's just impossible. You can only lie to yourself for so long, ya know? But if ya can't do it, ya can't do it! I've lost my confidence, my groove, and there's no getting it back!
Guide Project Yasuhiro 04
The hell? Why's he acting so depressed? I went from terrified to annoyed in no time flat...
Guide-Project-Aoi-11 that a teddy bear?
Guide Project Hifumi 12
Th-That teddy bear can taaaaalk!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 01
C'mon, what kind of cliched reaction is that!? You people just keep on reacting the same way...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
That's just making me more and more depressed.... Even if the hardware is backwards-compatible, I guess the same doesn't go for the characters. Humans are so stupid. Worse than any piece of software... Ugh, I'm just getting lower and lower...and...there's rock bottom. Here comes the Earth's core...
Guide Project Junko Disguise 02
This whole thing just feels sloppy as hell.
Guide Project Byakuya 08
You expect us to believe *you're* the headmaster? Stop screwing around.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
You're right. I screw around too much. I've spent half my life apologizing for the other half of my life.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
But I've been spending so much time trying to think of what to make you guys do, and I'm just...lost. Meanwhile, I've been totally neglecting myself. Trying to laugh it off now would just be another lie...
Guide Project Makoto 10
Where the heck is this going...?
Guide Project Toko 03
You've been n-neglecting yourself? What does that e-even mean?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
I forgot to do something that was gonna be a vital part of your greeting today. Agh, what the heck...? My stomach's starting to hurt from all this self-loathing.
Guide Project Sayaka 1
He seems really depressed... What is it you think he forgot?
Guide Project Sakura 04
I don't think that matters. All that matters is finding a way out of here.
Guide Project Kiyotaka 08
No, I need to know! Tell us, what did you forget!? If necessary, you should cancel the entrance ceremony and take the time to prepare a proper one!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
...You're right. What I forgot backups.
Guide Project Celestia 09
Backups for what...?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
For me! Duh!
Guide Project Chihiro 11
Backups What?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 09
Huh? I don't understand why you don't understand.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 22
A backup! A spare! An in-case-of-emergency!
Okay, we get it!
So if you can have "backups" does that mean you really are a toy or a robot or whatever?
Guide Project Kyoko 06
If I understand what he's saying, that *would* make sense.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 22
No, see...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 04
Oh! Okay, I got it! I don't like to admit this, but...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 10
Yes! I'm a robot so advanced, even the folks at NASA can't recreate or even comprehend it!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 04
But I don't have any backups! So I can't begin!
What can't you begin? The entrance ceremony?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 01
Sure, that too. But even more than that, I can't even begin your school life itself! Without a backup, the first time I break, that'll be the end of everything for you guys!
Guide Project Mondo 04
I don't think any of us give a shit if you break or whatever...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 09
Don't be stupid! Without a headmaster, how can your life here run smoothly?
Guide Project Celestia 06
But did you not say that you are so advanced, even NASA cannot comprehend it?
Guide Project Celestia 04
So you should not break so easily, am I right?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 04
YOU guys are gonna break me! You blew me up in the prologue last time, and tore me apart in chapter 5!
Guide Project Makoto 08
...Huh? Prologue? Chapter 5? What is he talking about?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 02
But anyway! Let's not worry about that. Before we can begin your school life here...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 03
...I'm gonna have you guys build me some backups!
What!? Aww man, come on!
What's he even talking about...?
Guide Project Byakuya 07
You think you can give me orders, you living garbage?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 02
I do. And while you're at it...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
...I'll have you add a bunch of awesome bonus features!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
Like make me super handsome, or eco-friendly, that kind of modern trendy feel...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 05
Or! It might be good for a Japanese-style mascot like me to have a super cutesy, super moe backup!
Guide Project Mondo 01
What the hell, man!? You're talkin' like we already agreed to help!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
Well you're gonna, right? It's important that you grow as students, sure, but...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 05 also have the opportunity to help your teacher grow!
Guide Project Toko 06
You think f-fake inspirational crap like that is gonna g-get us on your side...?
Guide Project Hifumi 16
I don't think he's listening. He's just creating his own reality as he goes....
Guide Project Yasuhiro 13
Man, if this is the kind of bizarre crap I can expect as a new student here, I'm just gonna go home.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 09
And how do you plan to do that? You saw the metal plates covering all the exits, didn't you?
Guide Project Sayaka 1
S-So we really *have* been imprisoned in here...
Guide Project Junko Disguise 07
What the hell is this!? Why would you trap us in here!? Let us the hell outta here!
Guide Project Celestia 09
He said he does not have a backup, yes? Why don't we just destroy this one right now?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 05
Ngrah! S-So it finally occurred to you...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 10
But I won't go out that easily! I'll use my NASA-level technology to run and hide and you'll never find me!
Guide Project Sakura 04
You seem like a monumental waste of technology...
Guide Project Mondo 03
Alright, that's it!
Guide Project Mondo 01
I'm not gonna be part of whatever shitty joke you're trying to pull here!
Yeah! Who gives a shit about some backup or whatever!? We're not here to take care of you!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 09
Okay, yeah, sure, I see what you're saying.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 10
Then...would you rather just start killing each other?
Guide Project Makoto 19
Guide Project Chihiro 11
Wh-What did you just say...?
Guide Project Sakura 04
I believe he said something about us killing each other...
Guide Project Kiyotaka 10
Killing...? What are you talking about...!?
Guide Project Kiyotaka 08
If that's supposed to be a joke, it's not funny! It's just...stupid!
Guide Project Hifumi 21
Y-Yeah... Even if you're just trying to make a point, that's taking it too far...!
C'mon, stop trying to freak us out just to get us to do what you want!
Just hurry up and let us out of here!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 06
Ugh! Would you guys please stop nagging me? "I wanna go home, I wanna go home!"
Guide Project Monokuma V3 02
I thought bears were crazy about *our* homing instinct, but you guys really take the cake!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
But I guess you can't really help yourselves.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 22
You're all part of that new-wave enlightenment generation. You need a specific goal to motivate you!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 10
Well then, here's a little spoiler!
Guide Project Makoto 08
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
Once the backups are done, we'll move on to the main event and you can begin your exciting school life.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
Once that starts, *then* you'll have the chance to trigger your escape flag!
Guide Project Toko 07
What are you t-talking about? Speak plainly!
Guide Project Junko Disguise 08
I dunno what he means, but he *did* just say something about escaping, right...?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
See? I was totally clear!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 10
If you want to escape, you'll have to live here peacefully and build me my backups!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 01
And you can't just hall-ass it, either.
Guide Project Monokuma V3 08
Build me a superior machine with flawless performance, that thrills and delights me, and you pass!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
And don't worry about living expenses. You have all the food, clothing, and shelter you need. I can even personally guarantee your health and safety! Even if you get sick or injured, I'll treat you right away in the Monokuma Emergency Center!
Guide Project Sayaka 1
I-I don't think that's what we're worried about... Why do we have to do all this in the first place?
Guide Project Monokuma V3 02
Whatever! Stop complaining and just do it!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 21
Now then... With this, the entrance ceremony...
Guide Project Monokuma V3 02
...hasn't even begun! I mean, you haven't even started your real school life yet! So obviously I can't welcome you yet. Which means this isn't a proper entrance ceremony!
Guide Project Monokuma V3 11
Okay, I'm done talking for now. Please enjoy these ever fleeting days of peace!
Guide Project Makoto 12
Without another word, he was gone, leaving us in dazed confusion.
Guide Project Kiyotaka 15 would you explain what the heck just happened?
Yeah, what the hell was that? I'm totally lost...
Guide Project Toko 03
We're t-trapped here, right? And if we make some "backups" then we can g-get out...?
Guide Project Kyoko 06
That seems to be the gist of it. If you think about everything that this "Monokuma" told us, you will notice there are two main points.
Guide Project Kyoko 11
The first point is that we're trapped here in the school. And the second, more important point... If we can create backups for him to his satisfaction, he will tell us how to *escape* from the school.
Guide Project Celestia 01
But one thing we do *not* know is why he wants us to do this at all.
Guide Project Celestia 08
What was his purpose in imprisoning us here in the first place?
Guide Project Chihiro 14
Yeah... What happened to Hope's Peak Academy?
Guide Project Sayaka 10
Did it get taken over by some evil organization or something?
Guide Project Sayaka 1
If that's the case, I'm sure the police will be here anytime...
Guide Project Hifumi 04
But can we even be sure this really is Hope's Peak?
Guide Project Yasuhiro 06
Listen, I'm sure this is all just some kind of elaborate orientation setup. They're, like, hazing us!
Guide Project Sayaka 2
But if that's true, it's in pretty bad friggin' taste. It's total overkill!
Guide Project Sakura 12
He's right. If it's a prank, it's far beyond the bounds of acceptability.
Guide Project Yasuhiro 05
Okay, fine. In that case... ...what *is* going on?
Guide Project Toko 07
That's what we're t-trying to figure out...!
Ya know...if he didn't forget to build those backups of his...what do you think he woulda made us do?
Guide Project Byakuya 06
Kill each other. That's what he said.
Guide Project Makoto 04
Guide Project Junko Disguise 04
Don't freak us out, dude! Who the hell would ever—!?
Guide Project Kiyotaka 08
Everyone just calm down!
Guide Project Kiyotaka 07
He said we'll have plenty of food and shelter, and we'll be kept safe. So that's good, right!?
Guide Project Kiyotaka 08
If we want to get out of here, we all need to work together!
Guide Project Mondo 08
I fuckin' hate the idea of being at the mercy of that goddamn bear... But what else can we do? Total pain in the ass, either way...
Guide Project Byakuya 04
That I would lower myself to serving that monstrosity...
Guide Project Celestia 09
But it seems our best option is to calmly adapt ourselves to this new situation.
Guide Project Celestia 08
If this truly is something that Hope's Peak has put together for us, then I am fine with that.
Guide Project Celestia 15
If that is *not* the case, and Hope's Peak has been taken over by some other force...
Guide Project Celestia 04 would be best not to blindly oppose them.
Guide Project Byakuya 04
Tch. It gives me chills to think I'll have to live here along with you unwashed masses...
Guide Project Byakuya 14
Well, whatever. I'll just have to make sure to finish things quickly... And then I will find whoever did this to me, and wipe them from the face of the Earth...
Guide Project Kiyotaka 07
Okay, well...! Does anyone else have any objections?
Guide Project Kiyotaka 08
...Silence gives consent, as they say! Then it's decided! From this point forward, we all agree to work together to maintain a peaceful communal life!
Guide Project Makoto 08
S-Sure... When I first got into Hope's Peak Academy... ...I thought, "Man! I can't believe I get to go to this amazing place!" But wherever I am now, it's 180 degrees away from whatever amazing place I'd made up in my mind. And that's how our bizarre communal life began...

Management Screen School Mode
The player has 50 days to build the assigned backups for Monokuma. Using a special character management system, the player may assign students to gather materials for crafting the Monokuma backups or constructing tools, rest for the day, or clean the school. Gathering materials will slowly consume a student's energy, as well as reduce the cleanliness gauge. Resting a student will not provide any materials, but will prevent that student from reducing the cleanliness gauge. Cleaning the school will consume the student's energy, but will increase the cleanliness gauge. If the cleanliness gauge becomes empty, Monokuma will force the students to clean the entire school, which will waste a day.

Trip Ticket School Mode
Makoto will also be given one block of Free Time every day - two on the one day per week that Makoto and his classmates are allowed off - which can be spent in a similar way to the Main Game, either sleeping or spending time with any of his classmates. Using the Trip Tickets which are rewarded for completing Monokuma's backups, Makoto can take students to a location of his choosing based on the student's tastes in order to build his relationship with them.

Monokuma's Backups

Throughout School Mode, Monokuma will request the player to assemble backup Monokumas based on specified concepts, by gathering materials. Assembling these backup Monokumas rewards the player with Trip Tickets, which can be used to take classmates on a trip to locations within the school and bond with them.

Free Time

For information on Free Time Events, see: Free Time Events/Danganronpa 1
Danganronpa 1 School Mode Trip Ticket
The player will be given one block of Free Time every day - two on the one day per week that Makoto and his classmates have off. The player can spend the block of Free Time with any one of Makoto's classmates, or sleep to skip that Free Time period.
School Mode Relationships
Makoto will also have the option to go on trips with his classmates by spending the Trip Tickets received as a reward for completing Monokuma's spares. Each time Makoto takes a classmate to a location, and will be able to ask the classmate a question. Depending on how the classmate responds to the question, Makoto will earn zero, one half, or one full reputation heart on that student's report card. Getting all 10 hearts will unlock that student's ending.

Trigger Happy Heart

School Mode Trigger Happy Heart 2
Trigger Happy Heart is a minigame in School Mode. It uses mechanics used in the Nonstop Debate trial minigame in the main plot and is similar to the "Shot Through the Heart" minigame in the Island Mode of Danganronpa 2. As Makoto builds his relationship with a character on Trips, Makoto will learn insights about the characters which can be used like truth bullets. Unlike the Nonstop Debate, there is no time limit on Trigger Happy Heart.

DR1 Present 111 Sakura's Undergarments
The Trigger Happy Heart event occurs when Makoto gets close to full reputation hearts on a classmate's report card. On the 51st day, if the player has completed Monokuma's final spare, Makoto will be alone in the Gym with any characters that the player has earned full max reputation with. Talking to them will trigger the character's true Trigger Happy Heart event. If the player selects the correct answer, they will receive that character's special present - that character's underwear. This will display a heart icon next to that character's picture's on subsequent playthroughs of School Mode.

School Mode Usami
After reaching the 51st day, if the player manages to build every backup assigned, the students will all gather around Monokuma, who yells at them for making a "backup" that doesn't even look like him. Out of anger and frustration, Monokuma decides to punish Makoto, saying that it would "motivate" the other students to do a better job next time, but the "backup" suddenly comes to life, introducing itself as Usami. After a small argument, Usami attacks Monokuma until he agrees to release the group and gives them the escape button before disappearing. Usami then thanks the group and says goodbye before mysteriously shutting down. Although many of the students are still confused, the group happily makes a small celebration as they are finally allowed to leave at last.

  • During the Monokuma Concepts segments, the blackboard scribbles, the pixels, and the names of the concepts are full of pop culture references:
    • Monokuma Casanova's name references Giacomo Casanova, and the pixel is dressed in the iconic white suit from Saturday Night Fever. The scribble on the board features Monokuma in a Terraria scenario; incidentally, Terraria is also published by Spike Chunsoft in Japan.
    • Monokuma Butler's pixel features a half-Monokuma, half-Roomba. The scribble on the board is a reference to Attack on Titan, with Monokuma as the Colossal Titan and Makoto in a Survey Corps uniform; incidentally, in the English dub, Makoto is voiced by Bryce Papenbrook, who also happens to be the voice actor for Eren Jaeger in the English dub of Attack on Titan.
    • Monokuma Entertainment System's name references the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the pixel is a Monokuma Furby. The scribble on the blackboard features Monokuma as Anpanman.
    • Cooking Mamakuma's name references the game Cooking Mama.
    • The MoeMoekuma pixel features Monokuma dressed as Tinker Bell from Peter Pan.
    • The Monokumadult board scribble features Monokuma with a cape and Lightsaber, and girls being pushed away as if hit by a Kamehameha.
    • Warlockuma's board scribble features Princess Piggles.
  • Most of the trophies awarded from School Mode are references to popular culture.
    • The trophy for completing Byakuya's report card references The Hunger Games.
    • The trophy for completing Mondo's report card references Rebel Without a Cause.
    • The trophy for completing Celestia's report card references The French Connection.
    • The trophy for completing Kyoko's report card references L.A. Confidential.
    • The trophy for completing Chihiro's report card references Goodfellas.
    • The trophy for completing Hifumi's report card references Lost in Translation.
    • The trophy for completing Sakura's report card references Bloodsport.
    • The trophy for completing Leon's report card references Almost Famous.
    • The trophy for completing Junko's report card references Memoirs of a Geisha.
    • The trophy for completing Aoi's report card references Mystic Pizza.
    • The trophy for completing Yasuhiro's report card references The Sixth Sense.
    • The trophy for completing Toko's report card references Strangers on a Train.
    • The trophy for completing Kiyotaka's report card references The Devil Wears Prada.
    • The trophy for completing Sayaka's report card references Psycho.
    • The trophies for completing School Mode once and for viewing every character's ending are both named after lyrics from the Alice Cooper song, School's Out.
  • During the introduction and the end, Monokuma will break the fourth wall by referencing how he was destroyed during the Prologue and Chapter 5, and how certain events (such as Usami's arrival) weren't supposed to happen until the sequel.
  • During Sayaka Maizono's ending, Makoto will have flashes of events from the main story involving him and Sayaka, who also seems to remember said events. This seems to imply that Sayaka really does have a limited amount of psychic ability, at least in the non-canon School Mode scenario.
