School Memories[]

Chapter 1 Motive
Danganronpa 2 CG - Monokuma and Monomi's show School Memories is a motive given by Monokuma to the participants of the Killing School Trip in Chapter 1 of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Monokuma promised them to restore their erased school memories in exchange of one of them committing a murder.

A few days after Monokuma converted Neo World Program into the Killing School Trip, he gathered the students in the Central Park to present them the first incentive to murder. He revealed that before coming to Jabberwock Island, the students did spend a good amount of time enrolling in Hope's Peak Academy, which shocked everyone as they have no recollection of such memories. Monokuma insinuated that "World Ender", the organization that controlled Monomi and supposedly the one who "trapped" them on the island, was the one responsible for taking away their memories with bad intentions. He manipulates the students to participate in his killing game by promising to restore their school memories, only if they murder one another. Otherwise, the traitor working for the World Ender hiding among their ranks will take their chance to kill one of them.

Among the students, Teruteru Hanamura took the bait as he was dead concerned with the wellbeing of his mother back home. However, that was not his sole motive to kill. He specifically wanted to stop Nagito Komaeda who planned a murder during the group party by killing him. In the end, Teruteru murdered the wrong target as he killed the Ultimate Imposter who interupted Nagito from carrying out his plan. He was found guilty in the first Class Trial that led him to his demise.

Ultimately, Monokuma never granted Teruteru the information about his mother's whereabout as the whole motive solely worked as a trick for the students to kickstart the killing game.

Despair Disease[]

Chapter 3 Motive
Nagito Komaeda Halfbody Sprite (Hospital Gown) (2) Despair Disease is a motive used in Chapter 3 of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. It's an endemic disease that is found on Jabberwock Island. According to Monokuma, there are extremely tiny insects that transmit the disease. As no one in the island but Monokuma knows how to cure the disease, it works effectively as a motive as the spread won't be stopped until a murder happens.

People who catch the Despair Disease will get a high fever. They turn very weak and need lots of rest, but they're still capable of moving and walking around (depending on the symptoms, they may even be very energetic and eager to move despite their weakened state). Nagito's symptoms are far worse, as he constantly loses consciousness and stays unconscious for most of the time, foams at mouth, is incapable of moving and is even close at dying - it's implied that this is due to the fact that he was already terminally ill before catching the Despair Disease.

The most notable symptom is a significant change in the individual's personality, which lasts until the person is cured. The symptoms of the victims are the opposite of their normal personalities and thus different based on the individual. For example, Nagito was afflicted by the Liar Disease, Akane Owari had the Coward Disease, and Ibuki Mioda had the Gullible Disease.

Due to the fever and personality change, most of the ill people appear to be in a groggy, fuzzy-headed state. Most likely, they don't remember everything that happened while they were sick. Mikan Tsumiki, on the other hand, is capable of clear, detailed planning while suffering from the Remembering Disease.

The disease is highly contagious and can get passed from person to person easily, just like the common cold.

In truth, however, it is a fictional disease that exists only in the Neo World Program's virtual version of the island. "The insects" appear to be just a story made up by Monokuma, who can cure and supposedly inflict the disease in a flash.

The spread of the endemic:

The students met up at the restaurant as instructed by Monokuma. Hajime Hinata found Akane who was unexpectedly crying and mourning after Nekomaru Nidai, who was injured by Monokuma, in a very emotional manner. Eventually, Hajime noticed that Nagito is acting strange as well, such as stating that Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu was cloned after his injury and a transfer student would replace Nekomaru who couldn't be saved. He even lied to Hiyoko Saionji that he saw Mahiru Koizumi being alive at the movie theater.

Eventually, when Ibuki turned up, everyone noticed that she is acting unusually casual. Moments later, Monokuma explained that Ibuki, Akane, and Nagito have caught the Despair disease. He also admitted that he placed them overnight.

None of the students knew how to cure the disease, but Mikan took care of the three in the third island's hospital. Whilst caring for the others, Mikan caught the Despair Disease herself, causing her to remember "her beloved". After Ibuki and Hiyoko were murdered, Monokuma quickly healed the victims and brought them to investigate the murder. Although everyone is cured of their symptoms, Mikan continued to remember "her beloved".

Starvation[]

Chapter 4 Motive
Danganronpa 2 CG - Monokuma's Tai Chi class Starvation is a motive used in Chapter 4 of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Monokuma trapped the remaining survivors in the fourth island's Funhouse without food or drink, forcing them to kill each other to escape such predicament.

Upon entering the fourth island, Monokuma lured the students into entering The Funhouse where he would knocked them out unconscious and later locked them inside the building. The motive this time is rather simple as he provides no food and drink until one of the remaining survivors commit a murder. Monokuma Tai Chi was added as a mandatory event where he would further exhaust the students' energy and pushed them to kill to get out of the dire situation.

Gundham Tanaka who refused to have everybody just idle around until they all dropped from starvation, planned and carried out the murder of Nekomaru on the third day of starvation by using the secret of the Funhouse to drop Nekomaru from a height of four floors, very successfully killing him.
