Kazuichi Soda (左右田 和一), is a student of Hope's Peak Academy's Class 77-B, and a participant of the Killing School Trip featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and its upcoming remake, Danganronpa 2x2.[12] His title is the Ultimate Mechanic (超高校級の「メカニック」 lit. Super High School Level Mechanic).
He also appears in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, which explores his school life leading up to the Killing School Trip and The Tragedy.
History[]
Early Life[]
Kazuichi had a rough upbringing due to his family's financial problems. He ran the family bike shop together with his father, but they struggled to sell anything. Their only customers were those who needed a flat tire fixed or air pumped. He claimed his father was "hopeless", so he was the one who always helped out at the shop. Kazuichi's family was so poor that he had to fake being sick and stay home to skip the middle school trip, though he had other reasons as well such as finding his classmates "boring." He received a beating from his father when he found out.[4]
Despite the stagnant business, Kazuichi got plenty of practice with his mechanic skills after constantly being surrounded by junk and tools since childhood. He grew a habit of taking things apart and putting them back together, as well as fixing things that need fixing, from bikes, cars, and kids' toys, to household appliances.[4] He tinkered, modified, and invented various things both at home and school. His greatest invention was attaching an engine to the machine that draws chalk lines on soccer fields. However, it escaped through the school entrance at full speed, without turning or stopping.[13]
Growing up, Kazuichi was a very skittish person which made him easily picked on. He described himself as a "weak, cowardly kid" who did nothing but study and tinker with machines, which led him to believe that everyone who spoke to him was a nice person. Even when he was betrayed or lied to, he convinced himself they had a good reason for it, because he was too afraid to admit the truth. However, he did have a best friend in middle school, with whom he did everything and could talk about anything. Once, Kazuichi let him cheat off his test because his friend had begged him for help, but they both got caught. He insisted that Kazuichi was the one who willingly gave him the answers. Starting from that point, his friend began avoiding Kazuichi, though, in actuality, Kazuichi didn't really care about being scolded. It took him a few years to realize that his best friend had been avoiding him possibly out of guilt and an inability to face him.[14] The middle schooler Kazuichi, however, began to develop trust issues, viewing humans as "creatures that betray each other."[13]
After drifting apart from his best friend, Kazuichi grew fed up with being walked over by others and decided to change his appearance entirely. He dyed his hair and started wearing contacts. Although he was initially unsure about what he wanted, he tried different styles and eventually settled on the appearance he had during the Killing School Trip. His altered appearance caused the people who used to hang around him to keep their distance, while instead attracting "punkasses" to him. Since then, Kazuichi hasn't needed to trust anyone and hasn't been betrayed either. Even "hot girls" started coming on to him, which he admitted was a little scary.[14]
While attending Tōshima Industry High School,[7][8] Kazuichi was scouted by Hope's Peak Academy to be enrolled in Class 77-B as the Ultimate Mechanic.
Prior to the Tragedy[]
Attending Hope's Peak Academy[]
First Year[]
Greeting Sonia
Kazuichi was among the students who did not regularly attend classes, as attendance was not mandatory for Ultimates so long as they continued to hone their talents. However, his homeroom teacher, Chisa Yukizome, who wanted Kazuichi and the others to build strong relationships and hope, thought otherwise.[15]
Greeted by Chisa
To encourage him to join his classmates, Chisa dispatched Sonia Nevermind, the Ultimate Princess, on whom Kazuichi had a crush, to persuade him. Kazuichi was busy working at a big machine until he noticed that Sonia had come to visit him. He approached her to give a happy greeting, but Sonia slowly backed away due to his strong smell of oil. Though Sonia lied about noticing his odor, Kazuichi was horrified when he saw Chisa tapping his shoulder while wearing a gas mask.[15]
Threatened by Chisa
Kazuichi joined his classmates to retrieve the rest, and he was hit by a truck when trying to locate Nagito Komaeda, the Ultimate Lucky Student. Once bandaged, Kazuichi was threatened by Chisa who stabbed two tantos at his table to force him to clean the classroom. He disliked his homeroom teacher at first but changed his mind soon after he heard Sonia's excitement.[15]
Bitten by Maga-Z
Kazuichi began attending classes regularly and participated in various activities with his classmates. He built a large monitor so everyone could play games brought by Chiaki Nanami, the Ultimate Gamer and soon-to-be class rep. He also ate lunch with his classmates, during which he became the victim of one of Hiyoko Saionji, the Ultimate Traditional Dancer's, pranks, dousing Teruteru Hanamura, the Ultimate Cook's, nikujaga with an aphrodisiac she stole from Teruteru. Under its effects, Kazuichi nearly took advantage of a vulnerable Sonia, but was stopped by Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, the Ultimate Yakuza. He also interacted frequently with his one-sided romantic rival, Gundham Tanaka, the Ultimate Breeder, who let Kazuichi play with his hamsters, though he was bitten by one at first.[16][17]
Unable to comfort Sonia who was saddened by Chisa's transfer
Shortly before his class's impending practical exam, Kazuichi learned that Chisa was to be put on a semester probationary transfer to the Reserve Course Department following Nagito's involvement in a bombing incident, who was subsequently suspended for a year.[18] Once Chisa returned, he joined her welcome-back party and felt jealous that Sonia and Gundham had grown closer, as they synchronized in welcoming back their teacher using Gundham's unique speech manner.[19]
Second Year[]
Kazuichi continued his one-sided love triangle quarrel with Gundham over Sonia even in their upperclassman year. What changed, and what Kazuichi noticed and was frightened by while observing from the Main Course building, was that the Reserve Course students had launched a massive protest against the Main Course, blaming them for causing The Tragedy of Hope's Peak Academy. Unbeknownst to most, the true mastermind behind the tragedy was Junko Enoshima, the originator of Ultimate Despair, who manipulated events behind the scenes and framed Izuru Kamukura—the result of the Izuru Kamukura Project—for the incident.[20][21]
Searching for Mikan
Although Kazuichi and his classmates were seemingly unrelated to the growing protest, they became involved after noticing that Mikan Tsumiki, the Ultimate Nurse, had been absent for some time. Nagito, who had recently returned from his suspension, claimed to have seen her on the school grounds, prompting Kazuichi and the others to search for her while the parade was ongoing, but to no avail.[22]
Contemplating whether to go or not upon Nagito's warning
Kazuichi and the rest of the class later reconvened in the school classroom, as they failed to locate Mikan, agitated as he assumed Nagito was spreading misinformation. However, he was shocked when Chiaki returned carrying an unconscious Nagito, and Mikan, whom they had been searching for, also appeared, carrying Peko Pekoyama, the Ultimate Swordswoman, who had been injured in a battle with Junko's twin sister, Mukuro Ikusaba. Chiaki and Nagito had infiltrated Junko's lair, but before Nagito could shoot Junko, Izuru knocked him out. Chisa, who had followed them, intervened just in time to buy enough time for Chiaki to carry Nagito to safety..[23]
Ordered by Sonia to carry Nagito
Although Kazuichi was worried, especially after Nagito warned them it might be a suicide mission, he agreed to help after Chiaki convinced him and the others. Kazuichi was then ordered by Sonia to give the exhausted Nagito a piggyback ride so he could join their rescue party, to which he obeyed.[23]
Rejoined by Nekomaru and Gundham
On their way to Junko's lair, their path was blocked by a band of Reserve Course students who wished to take them on in the battle to create placements on the Main Course for themselves. Gundham and Nekomaru Nidai, the Ultimate Team Manager, offered to hold off the attackers so Kazuichi and the others could go ahead. Although Kazuichi reassured the worried Sonia that Gundham knows how to get things done, which was proven as they managed to rejoin the group thanks to Mikan's communication, he regretted helping his romantic rival's credibility with Sonia.[24]
Class 77-B brainwashed
Unbeknownst to Kazuichi and his classmates, this path to search for Chisa was nothing but a ruse made by Junko, with the help of Mikan and Chisa themselves who had been brainwashed into despair, to lead Class 77-B into what appeared to be the same room later used for the Class Trials. In this very room, Kazuichi and the others were forced to watch Chiaki executed in a brutal fashion. Kazuichi was horrified and wanted to find a way to save her, but he couldn't tear his eyes away from the monitor. Bearing witness to Chiaki's death caused the brainwashing effect of the video to take hold of Class 77-B, plunging them into despair.[24]
Kazuichi Soda, the Ultimate Despair
Fully brainwashed into becoming the Ultimate Despair, Kazuichi and his classmates received their final lesson before "graduation", the one final meeting to discuss their plan to overthrow the world with despair. Kazuichi expressed that he would "find the solution to air pollution." Chisa then activated a bomb that faked the death of Class 77-B so they could be taken off the list of protected students. Later, Kazuichi and his class stood outside the school grounds as they watched Hope's Peak's destruction.[25]
The Tragedy[]
Creating a giant Monokuma
Kazuichi joined the Ultimate Despair after falling prey to Junko's brainwashing.[25] Alongside her corrupted classmates, she started The Tragedy and kept it ongoing even after Junko's death in the final stage of the Killing School Life.[6] Kazuichi and his classmates who did not commit suicide to follow their leader Junko soon became known as the Remnants of Despair.[6] They also hacked her body and grafted them onto themselves—though in Kazuichi's case, the specific body parts he took remain unknown. One of his notorious contributions was inventing and overseeing the production of a giant Monokuma.[26]
Remnants of Despair
Eventually, the Future Foundation secured the custody of Kazuichi and the other fourteen - at first only aware that they were survivors from Hope's Peak Academy. When Makoto Naegi, a survivor of the Killing School Life, by that time a member of the 14th Division of the Future Foundation, realized that the survivors were in fact, Remnants of Despair, he quickly directed them to Jabberwock Island in secret.[6]
Neo World Program
Makoto had them enter the Neo World Program, where their memories were reset to a time before their enrollment at Hope's Peak Academy, prior to being brainwashed by Junko. As a result, none of them was able to recognize each other. The plan was to overwrite Kazuichi and the others' memories of themselves as Ultimate Despair, replacing them with good ones to undo all the damage Junko had done to them.[6]
Unbeknownst to Makoto, Kazuichi and the other Remnants had deliberately allowed themselves to be captured.[27] Before they entered the program, one of their members, Izuru Kamukura, the Ultimate Hope and final product of the Izuru Kamukura Project, uploaded Junko's malware AI. This AI became the virus that usurped the Observer Usami's role as teacher. Gaining full control of the program gave her the authority to convert the Neo World Program to the Killing School Trip, thereby subjecting Kazuichi and the others to a killing game while simultaneously using them as bait to lure Makoto and other Future Foundation members.[6]
Killing School Trip[]

Killing School Trip participants
Once inside the realistically simulated environment of Jabberwock Island, Kazuichi discovered that all airplanes in the airport had their engines removed, rendering them unusable. Although he found it strange and suspected that the person behind the school trip was very well-prepared, Kazuichi tolerated it, as they were not forced to do anything dangerous, noting that the school trip guidelines were listed in the e-Handbook. Since he had lost his school memories, Kazuichi believed this was his very first school trip, which made him rather carefree and look forward to the "vacation." He even started thinking that Usami was kind of cute.[28]
Playing at the beach
Later, Kazuichi and his classmates were assembled by Usami at the first island's beach. She reassured the students that there was no need to worry and provided Kazuichi and the others with swimsuits, encouraging them to fully enjoy their "school trip". Kazuichi accepted her offer by changing into his swimsuit and playing at the beach with the others.
The Killing School Trip begins
The promising tropical school trip, however, turned into a nightmare immediately as Kazuichi learned that the evil animatronic bear, Monokuma, the self-proclaimed headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy, had hijacked their trip and turned it into a killing game. Having his school trip experience short-lived, Kazuichi instantly refused to obey Monokuma, until he witnessed Usami-turned-Monomi being blown to pieces by Monobeasts as a warning to anyone who dared to defy Monokuma and his killing game.
Kazuichi's enthusiasm turned into paranoia overnight, especially after discovering that the Monobeasts were stationed at all bridges to prevent students from exploring the other islands. When Peko informed him and Hajime Hinata that the group had been waiting for them at a meeting in the hotel restaurant, he cowered in fear and ran off elsewhere instead. It took Mahiru Koizumi, the Ultimate Photographer, dragging him to the hotel restaurant to make him give up on running away. Though he eventually joined the meeting and checked out the mysterious countdown at Jabberwock Park, he continued to lament his ruined vacation and kept wanting to lock himself in his room. He was briefly distracted from his paranoia by openly showing his attraction toward Sonia, much like during his school years, immediately calling her "Miss Sonia" and treating her differently from the others. In contrast, Kazuichi started disliking Gundham for impressing Sonia with his hamsters.
Coconut Party
Kazuichi had yet to give up on his tropical vacation by inviting Hajime to enjoy the coconuts he had found on the beach earlier. This bonus scene could only be triggered if Hajime had a replica sword and gave it to Kazuichi, before following the Ultimate Imposter to the Jabberwock Park. Peko and Ibuki Mioda, the Ultimate Musician, who happened to be walking around the island together, helped the trio to open the coconuts, allowing Kazuichi and the others to enjoy them.
All-Night Party[]
Attending the Imposter's party
Kazuichi agreed to join the Imposter's all-night party at the old building. He only complained that he had to go through a thorough body check performed by the Imposter, leading to the wrench he had been carrying since he found it at the airport being confiscated in one of the duralumin cases. As soon as the party started, a blackout occurred, throwing the group into distress. Kazuichi tried to reach the office with the circuit breaker by feeling his way along the wall, but the lights came back on before he could reach it. He still made his way to the office to locate the missing Imposter, where he found no one, including Peko, who was supposed to be on guard duty in the room. Once the group reconvened in the dining hall, that was when they discovered the Imposter's body under one of the tables, much to his horror.
Descending to the trial ground
Kazuichi once again returned to the office during the investigation, and realized that even with a stepladder, no one could've reached the circuit breaker as it was so high up, and heard from Monokuma himself that he was the one who reset the breaker. During both the investigation and the class trial, Kazuichi was convinced that Peko was the killer, accusing her of conveniently abandoning her post during the blackout. He claimed she had tripped the circuit breaker and used the blackout to her advantage to kill the Imposter, also saying her appearance looked like "an assassin."
His accusation was disproved when Nekomaru testified that Peko had to use the toilet during the party and blackout due to a stomach cramp, proving her innocence. It was revealed that Nagito masterminded the blackout to commit murder, but the Imposter intervened and was accidentally killed by Teruteru, who tried to foil Nagito's plan. Kazuichi couldn't believe that Teruteru, who was the most in denial about their situation, could fall into the temptation of the first motive. He survived the first class trial after he watched Teruteru being executed. Following Sonia's motivational speech, Kazuichi claimed he was deeply moved by her words and felt compelled to do his best.
Beach Party[]
Following the class trial, Kazuichi and Nekomaru neutralized Nagito to prevent him from further endangering the group. They knocked Nagito out, tied him up, and confined him in the crime scene to reflect on his wrongdoings. Though they both tried to keep this a secret from everyone, Nekomaru slipped up after claiming that the traitor among the group belonging to the "World Ender", which he believed to be Nagito, had been "taken care of." Despite this, most people agreed with their decision, so long as Nagito was kept alive and didn't starve to death.
Meanwhile, after discovering the private beach house on the newly opened second island, Kazuichi came up with the idea of throwing a party at the private beach with Sonia. Luckily for him, he overheard Sonia's plan to throw a secret girls-only beach party. The enthusiastic Kazuichi brokered this information to Hajime secretly at the supermarket at 2:30 PM. He intended to drag Hajime along to crash the party, making their appearance later at the beach a pure coincidence. Kazuichi refused to invite any other guys but Hajime to keep the plan subtle, even pressuring him further by giving him a matching swimsuit. They headed to the diner next to Chandler Beach an hour earlier than the scheduled party time at 4 PM to wait for the girls, a plan Hajime labelled as a stalkerish move. Whilst on the lookout, Kazuichi and Hajime spotted Fuyuhiko wandering around the diner area and decided to confront him. Kazuichi mistakenly assumed Fuyuhiko had overheard his plan and was following them. When the first two girls, Mikan and Ibuki, arrived, Kazuichi became too distracted trying to come up with an excuse, not realizing that Fuyuhiko had quietly slipped away. He was forced to confess his true intention to crash the party after he accidentally blurted out that Mikan and Ibuki had arrived 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled meeting time, a knowledge supposedly only known by the invitees. Still, since the two girls didn't have the authority to kick them out, they let Kazuichi and Hajime sit with them at the diner until Sonia and the others arrived.
Spotting Hiyoko running away from the Chandler Beach
While they waited, Kazuichi and the others spotted Hiyoko running away from the direction of the beach, which struck them as odd, as she had declined the beach party invitation according to Ibuki and Mikan. Kazuichi's attention was soon diverted as the girls began arriving at the diner one by one. Though he couldn't help but admire their figures, he was waiting for the main event, Sonia, who showed up a bit late, wearing a wetsuit, much to his disappointment. However, he quickly recovered, praising her tight outfit for being a wise choice to protect her fair skin.
Caught up in his enthusiasm, Kazuichi ended up confessing his plan to join the girls-only party directly to Sonia. Kazuichi was only allowed to join after Sonia agreed with Chiaki to allow only a few boys to join. Overjoyed, he went ahead to the beach house to set up parasols and drinks so they could all enjoy the party. However, what greeted Kazuichi when he entered the beach house was the sight of Mahiru's body, prompting the body discovery announcement.
Asking Mikan to stop Fuyuhiko's bleeding.
During the class trial, it was revealed that Kazuichi was the third innocent person to discover Mahiru's corpse, thus triggering the body discovery announcement. The first was Fuyuhiko, who had originally plotted to kill her at the crime scene, and the second was Hiyoko, who was lured into the beach house and incapacitated to be framed as the killer, both of whom Kazuichi spotted around the area while waiting for the beach party to start. His suspicions about Peko's alibi, that she swam around the island, were eventually proven correct, as she had fabricated the story to hide the fact that she was the real culprit. After Peko's execution, Kazuichi, despite his usual hostility toward Fuyuhiko, panicked when he noticed Fuyuhiko suffered injuries from his interference. He desperately asked Mikan to help stop the bleeding, but since they lacked proper medical tools, they had no choice but to leave his fate to Monokuma, who saved him by transporting him to the hospital on the soon-to-be-opened third island.
Trapped by the Ocean Scent[]
The morning after the class trial, Kazuichi was shocked to see a memorial dedicated to Mahiru in the restaurant; he thought it was made in poor taste due to its ominous appearance. He soon changed his mind after learning that Hiyoko had clumsily yet sincerely built it and even proposed to keep it until the group left the island.
Once the third island became accessible, Kazuichi explored Electric Avenue, where he found that the machines in the Voyeur Corner seemed to be frequently used for shady activities like wiretapping or recording secret videos, thanks to his 'expertise.' He also overheard Hajime and Monokuma's discussion about Usami X File, something Hajime discovered on a laptop in Laptop Corner. The file detailed the events of The Tragedy, which Monokuma asserted were real and had taken place, making Kazuichi feel uneasy.
While visiting Fuyuhiko in his hospital room, Kazuichi became distracted by Nekomaru and Akane Owari, the Ultimate Gymnast, who had left earlier to do "it." If Hajime had the R/C 4WD Battler Taro in his inventory and spoke to Kazuichi before talking to anyone else in Fuyuhiko's room, it would trigger a bonus event. In this event, the nosy Kazuichi embarked on a mission to confirm his suspicion that Nekomaru and Akane engaged in an intimate relationship and did sexual acts. Although initially nervous about being found out, Hajime inadvertently rallied him, leading Kazuichi to drag him along to Akane's cottage. He was dismayed upon discovering that "it" was actually just Nekomaru performing his special massages for his athlete.
Reaction to Ibuki's performance
Kazuichi was present when Fuyuhiko made a surprising formal greeting to everyone in the hotel restaurant and was later horrified to witness him attempting harakiri, reopening his wound, in an attempt to atone for his past behavior. This prompted Kazuichi, Nekomaru, and Mikan to carry Fuyuhiko back to the hospital. Kazuichi attended Fuyuhiko's recovery party that night, hosted by Ibuki, whose heavy metal performance traumatized him to the point that he begged her not to play another song. His wish was granted when Monomi interrupted the party, urgently calling the group to save Akane from an impending execution for dueling Monokuma. Kazuichi once again witnessed violence as Nekomaru shielded Akane from Monokuma's bazooka and was taken away for treatment, something Kazuichi desperately hoped would save him.
Despair Disease[]
The trouble did not stop there as Kazuichi discovered that Nagito, Akane, and Ibuki, had contracted the Despair Disease, which gave them a high fever and altered their personalities drastically. Monokuma announced that the disease wouldn't stop spreading until a murder occurred, thus forcing Kazuichi and the healthy students to isolate themselves from the sick in a nearby motel, while Mikan, Hajime, and Fuyuhiko volunteered to care for them. Meanwhile, Kazuichi didn't object when Hiyoko ordered him to create a communication device to limit contact with the sick students and avoid catching the disease. By evening, he finished repurposing a household surveillance camera and monitor he found in Electric Avenue, modifying it into a pair of video chat devices. He delivered one to the hospital, while the other, due to its limited range, had to be set up at the nearby music venue instead of the motel. The device allowed both groups to stay in contact, but it did little to advance the search for a cure to the Despair Disease, and failed to prevent the murders of Ibuki and Hiyoko.[29]
Agreeing with Kazuichi's statement during the third class trial.
During the class trial, Kazuichi and Sonia were briefly suspected by Fuyuhiko, who had been misled by the culprit into believing one of them had turned the music venue into a sealed room, a theory quickly debunked. When the discussion returned to the surveillance camera unit, the group pinpointed the true filming location of Ibuki's apparent suicide: the hospital's conference room. Kazuichi noted it was the only area within the camera's range, helping the group to conclude that the suicide footage had been staged by the true culprit: Mikan. After Mikan was correctly voted off as the Blackened and executed, Kazuichi was frustrated as she, having reverted to her Ultimate Despair persona, revealed information they could not remember and planted the belief that the Future Foundation was their enemy, with a mole remaining among the group. While still under duress, Monokuma revealed that Nekomaru's "treatment" was complete, and urged Kazuichi and the others to haste to the first island beach where he was waiting.[29]
Kazuichi was in denial and shock upon learning that Nekomaru had been turned into a robot at first, assuming that he was only wearing a mask. He calmed down after learning that Nekomaru had fully accepted his new body and even developed a fascination with the technology, asking questions about his programming and self-awareness. Seeing Nekomaru shield Akane from another bazooka launched by Monokuma made him geek out even more over the fact that Nekomaru was a real robot and made him want to disassemble him.
The Funhouse[]
Riding a roller coaster
While "Mechamaru" introduced him and the group to his new "useless" functions the next morning, Kazuichi grew wary of the traitor among them. He began to act apprehensively around Hajime, whom he suspected as the traitor for being the only one in the group who couldn't remember his Ultimate talent. He also initially refused to explore the fourth island, believing it would be another futile attempt to find an escape. He only gave in once Monokuma promised the group ship parts and the group's Hope's Peak student profiles as a reward for exploring. Once he found out they had to ride a roller coaster at the amusement park to get the promised prize, Kazuichi refused, citing his motion sickness, but Mechamaru ended up forcing him on anyway.[30][31] The prize turned out to be a school file related to the Killing School Life, which, instead of helping them understand their circumstances, only confused them further.
Train to the Funhouse
Still shaken from the roller coaster, Kazuichi joined the others aboard a small train to the Funhouse in search of the promised ship parts, unknowingly walking into a trap. They were gassed with white smoke, rendered unconscious, and woke up inside the Funhouse's Strawberry House. It turned out Monokuma had subjected them to an escape game, where he wouldn't allow anyone to escape the Funhouse except through murder.
The group opted to pair up to search for an exit. Before he could even ask Sonia to pair up with him, however, she had taken off with Gundham, much to his dismay. With no better option, he joined Chiaki and, reluctantly, her partner Nagito, who said out loud Kazuichi's true intent of trying to avoid Hajime. Once being outed, Kazuichi stated that he still couldn't bring himself to trust Hajime, given how little he knew about him, much like how none of them had realized how drastically different Mikan was before and during the third class trial. He even claimed that Hajime had deliberately lured the group into the Funhouse, noting that it had been his suggestion to go in the first place.
In the contact elevator
Following Monokuma's orders, Kazuichi reluctantly boarded the contact elevator to the second building, the Grape House, along with the others. As it began to move, he noticed the complete lack of vibration and briefly wondered if it was a high-performance elevator. Upon reaching the Grape House, the animatronic bear revealed that he would no longer provide food or drinks, using their hunger as a time limit until a murder occurred. He was devastated to hear that, and even more so to learn that Sonia had once again left to explore with Gundham. Even Chiaki secretly parted away from him and Nagito, as being around them exhausted her. The fact that she went to Hajime of all people in the Grape Tower, which also somehow attracted the group to join them, further fueled Kazuichi's suspicion toward him.
The group's search for an exit ultimately yielded nothing. As the nighttime fell, the group assigned themselves rooms, with the boys—excluding Hajime—staying in Strawberry House. Kazuichi lost at rock-paper-scissors and was assigned the Crummy Room, which he accepted with a shrug. When he found out that the leftover Hajime was invited to become the girls' neighbor in the Grape House, however, he protested, yet it did not change the girls' decision.
On the third day of their confinement, Kazuichi and his classmates were forced to begin attending Monokuma Tai Chi sessions in the morning, intended to exhaust and starve the already low-energy students. It began to erode Kazuichi's hope for survival and escape, further worsening his fixation on labeling Hajime as the traitor.
Telling Fuyuhiko to stop the alarm
On the morning of the fourth day, Kazuichi—still asleep past 7:30 AM—was jolted awake by the loud ringing of the lounge clock alarm. In the lounge, he saw Fuyuhiko trying to stop the alarm and a visibly disturbed Gundham nearby. The clock showed 5:30 AM, though Kazuichi didn't know that Gundham had secretly set it back by two hours. Once the alarm was stopped, they were shaken by a sudden, loud rumbling sound that made Kazuichi panic and cling to Fuyuhiko. They waited for something to follow up, but since nothing really happened, their exhausted selves returned to their rooms, unaware that the sound they heard was Nekomaru falling to his death.
At 7:00 AM (9:00 AM in reality), Kazuichi, Gundham, Fuyuhiko, and Nagito attempted to use the elevator to reach Grape Tower for Monokuma Tai Chi, believing they had gone on time. However, they discovered that the elevator was broken, along with the Strawberry Hall door button, leaving them completely cut off from the other house. After hearing the confirmation over the lounge phone that Nekomaru had been found dead in Grape Tower, Kazuichi gave his earlier testimony to Nagito before heading off to repair the disabled elevator.
Kazuichi found the task quite difficult without proper tools and was surprised when Nagito casually lent him a multi-tool, claiming he had brought it with him even before setting foot on the fourth island. In exchange, Nagito asked him to ride the elevator once fixed and observe how the compass on the multi-tool reacted. The compass ended up rotating 180 degrees, so unusual that Kazuichi initially thought it might be broken. He also confirmed that the Grape House's elevator control panel was the one that had been forcibly opened and that the safety device had been tampered with by the culprit. He complied with Nagito's request once again, though hesitantly, as he was told to disassemble Mechamaru, akin to performing an autopsy. He discovered that the reason why Nekomaru stopped 'functioning' was the damage he had taken to his head. He then opened Nekomaru's chest panel and revealed his radio clock that helped the group in the class trial to determine the correct time of the murder. As if that weren't already disrespectful to Nekomaru's body, Nagito then forced Kazuichi to "recycle" his parts to repair the door in Strawberry Hall, a task Kazuichi completed immediately.
Rebuttal Showdown
Kazuichi contributed to the class trial by trying to impress Sonia with his theories, though most of them were quickly debunked. Several of his testimonies, however, such as the arrangement of Nekomaru's disassembled parts being unmoved and the compass test in the elevator, helped the group to grasp the true structure of the Funhouse. Later, he argued that Nekomaru couldn't have died simply from falling while suspended in midair, but his theory was disproven. He then begged Sonia to humiliate him again, only to be dismayed when she praised his contribution instead. At the climax of the class trial, the group managed to single out Gundham as the true culprit. He was later executed, and thus freed Kazuichi and the others from the Funhouse back to Jabberwock Island.
The Beginning of the End[]
Once released from the Funhouse, Kazuichi pulled an all-nighter to build Minimaru, a small toy version of Mechamaru with multiple functions, using parts from the real one. Although Akane forcefully took it for herself, he didn't protest, since he had built it to cheer everyone up and honor Nekomaru's sacrifice anyway. He also delivered a speech he had memorized all night to rally the group and, most importantly, to impress Sonia, but was left heartbroken when she completely ignored it. Soon after, he learned that Hajime was part of the Reserve Course Department, unlike the rest of the group, which made him drop his earlier suspicions of Hajime being the traitor.
Following Sonia's lead, Kazuichi joined her and the others in exploring the fifth and final island. He ventured into one of Sea King Industries' research facilities, which Monokuma revealed to be the production site of the Monobeasts and other types of robots. While snooping around, he came across a computer and found an email from an anonymous sender detailing the global riots that occurred during The Tragedy, something so bizarre that he tried to deny its legitimacy. Subsequently, Kazuichi and the others discussed their findings, which were interrupted by the uninvited Nagito. He menacingly announced his plan to weed out the traitor within the Future Foundation.
Capturing Nagito
Fearing Nagito was planning to commit murder, Kazuichi pulled another all-nighter to devise a plan to capture the Ultimate Lucky Student. He went with the most straightforward plan: appointing himself as the commander and assigning Chiaki as a decoy to lure Nagito into the hotel lobby, allowing task force members Fuyuhiko and Akane to capture him at the right moment. Hajime was put on chore duty to supply the rope for tying Nagito, while Sonia was exempt from any dirty work. Sonia objected to the arrangement and instead, insisting on taking Hajime with her to secretly investigate the Ancient Ruins, leaving Kazuichi heartbroken and dejected.
Nagito bombing the hotel lobby
The capture plan was executed later that night, and was initially working with Fuyuhiko and Akane quickly subduing the target. However, Kazuichi and the others were unaware of how far Nagito had come prepared, as he immediately detonated the bomb he had planted in the hotel lobby, sending them flying. He later revealed it was merely a demonstration, claiming he had planted a large number of bombs across Jabberwock Island, enough to destroy an entire island if detonated. His true plan was to weed out the traitor, and if they failed to reveal themselves, he would detonate the island in two days, leaving Kazuichi flustered.
After the bombing, Kazuichi and the others were given hints as to where he had planted the rest of the bombs, a place they hadn't visited yet. They visited Nezumi Castle, where the locked entrance had been blasted open by Nagito. Inside, they discovered that the password to the Ancient Ruins had been deliberately erased, which they suspected was Nagito's doing. Kazuichi, who had been paranoid about the bombing threat, asked the traitor to reveal themselves to Nagito, regardless of who they were, unintentionally causing tension that led the group to split up for the day.
On the morning of the deadline, Kazuichi covered the exploration of the second island after Nagito warned the group one last time. Later, he joined Fuyuhiko, who had discovered the pile of bombs inside the Plushie Factory, which Kazuichi could not disarm as the main detonator was locked inside a metal box. The bomb turned out to be fake, revealing its true nature as nothing more than a fireworks display once it "detonated." Then the video message on the laptop played again, with Nagito saying he was waiting for them at the warehouse next door "to reveal the traitor's identity," which made a fed-up Kazuichi rush there.
Throwing the fire grenade
After they forced the jammed door of the warehouse open, Kazuichi and the others were greeted by darkness at first, but after a certain delay, flames began to engulf the warehouse. They immediately went to the factory break room to grab fire extinguishing supplies and tried to put out the fire by throwing them. The flames were soon doused by the sprinklers, allowing Kazuichi and the others to enter the warehouse after the smoke cleared. What greeted them inside, however, was the horrifying sight of Nagito's lifeless body.
Triggering the warehouse's sprinkler
Kazuichi was resolved to survive the class trial, wanting to believe in Monokuma's announcement that the remaining survivors would be able to graduate once the countdown ended. At first, Kazuichi was convinced that Nagito was tortured by his killer. However, through intense debate and discussion, he was shocked to learn that Nagito had orchestrated his own death, including setting the fire, stabbing his own limbs, and impaling his abdomen with a spear he held himself.
Revealed as a possible culprit
What truly caused Nagito's death was inhaling poisonous gas he had poured into one of the fire grenade canisters that was thrown into the warehouse by one of the remaining survivors. This revealed the horrifying truth that Nagito's plan all along was to manipulate one of them into unknowingly killing him. As Kazuichi and the others began to panic, Chiaki, who concluded that Nagito specifically targeted the traitor, had to out herself as one to allow her friends to vote for the correct culprit. Kazuichi doubted her confession initially, but thanks to the convincing effort of Hajime, he had no choice but to vote for her. After Chiaki and Monomi were executed, Kazuichi and the others waited for the countdown to end.
Shortly before the countdown ended, the Neo World Program began glitching. Kazuichi and the others, including the illusion of the deceased students, gathered at the hotel restaurant to watch the rest of Nagito's video message, which Sonia had discovered at the factory. They learned that Nagito had uncovered the truth behind the Killing School Trip, but due to the glitching, they couldn't fully understand it, except for the password to the Ancient Ruins. With this knowledge, the group hurried to the Ancient Ruins. Once inside, they were transported to what appeared to be a trial ground.
Graduation Exam[]
Inside "Hope's Peak Academy," Monokuma tasked Kazuichi and the remaining survivors to undergo a "graduation exam." It required them to learn about the outside world by investigating materials Monokuma had scattered throughout the academy—a means meant to buy him time until "the main cast," the survivors of the Killing School Life working with the Future Foundation, arrived inside the Neo World Program. Once separated from Sonia, Kazuichi found himself inside the office, inspecting a newspaper clipping that showcased the puzzling photo of Hiyoko after her growth spurt.
Trapped in a lose-lose situation
The final class trial revealed that Kazuichi and the others have been existing as avatars inside a virtual reality all along and were members of the Remnants of Despair. The Ultimate Mechanic was then swayed by Alter Ego Junko to choose the given "Graduate" option, despite fully knowing that it would allow the virus to upload herself into the bodies of dead students. The proposed shutdown sequence by Makoto and the Killing School Life survivors worsened Kazuichi's dilemma, as its side effect would've rid their memories of the Killing School Trip. Furthermore, it would revert him and the others into their Remnants of Despair selves, which would have highly increased their chance of being targeted by hostile Future Foundation members.
Initiating the shutdown sequence
Before Kazuichi succumbed further to despair, the reinvoked Hajime encouraged him to trust in his ability to shape his own future. His words helped Kazuichi declare his resolve to protect the island, the only place he could go back to. Together with the other survivors, he initiated the shutdown sequence with ease.
Returning to the real world
As the Neo World Program began collapsing once Alter Ego Junko was purged, Kazuichi stated how scared he was. Even so, he refused to forget everyone and everything that had transpired, and expected the same in return. As they returned to the real world, they chose to remain on Jabberwock Island, possibly hoping to help their comatose friend. Kyoko Kirigiri speculated that it was a decision that showed they had discarded their Ultimate Despair identity.[32]
Post-Killing School Trip[]
Nagito's Illusory World[]
- Main article: Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the World Vanquisher
After suffering a traumatic death in the Killing School Trip, Nagito inhabited a strange, peaceful dream world created by the Neo World Program as a coping mechanism. The illusory copy of Kazuichi was one of its byproducts, appearing to have established a tight friendship with Nagito as well as Fuyuhiko.[33]

He made his first appearance alongside Fuyuhiko on their way to school, where they ran into the injured Nagito. Although the concerned Kazuichi suggested that Nagito visit the nurse's office, he was later shocked to find his injuries had worsened once he returned to the classroom; yet another result of his series of "bad luck."

The illusory Kazuichi retained his affection toward Sonia, with the huge difference being that the illusory Sonia appeared to reciprocate his feelings and consented to go on a date with him. The news brought Nagito to tears, knowing his friend had finally achieved his dream. Overwhelmed by such a reaction, Kazuichi peeked at Sonia from across the classroom. She noticed and gave Kazuichi a wave to which he responded the same, blushing happily.

Kazuichi, however, believed he wasn't good enough for Sonia, causing him to almost ditch the date had Fuyuhiko and Nagito not intervened. It took his friends' encouragement for him to think otherwise, allowing him to get the courage and go on with the date. Kazuichi and Sonia took a picture together on their date, which Sonia admired through her phone screen later that night.

The next day, however, a funeral for Kazuichi was held after he was found murdered by the World Destroyer. Fuyuhiko and Sonia, with the help of Peko, sought to take vengeance for their fallen classmate.

After Nagito awoke from the Neo World Program, however, he was relieved to discover that the real Kazuichi was alive and well. Kazuichi, along with his classmates, had been waiting for Nagito at the harbor, the last of the fallen to be resurrected by Hajime. Purged of Junko's brainwashing, they boarded the boat heading for the Future Foundation HQ to stop the Final Killing Game involving Future Foundation leaders.[33]
Atonement[]
Kazuichi and his classmates arrived at the island where the Future Foundation's off-shore facility was located. Once they rescued Byakuya and Yasuhiro Hagakure from beneath the rubble, the group set out to confront their one and only classmate, Ryota Mitarai, the Ultimate Animator, who Junko had coerced into creating the brainwashing video that transformed Kazuichi and the others into the Ultimate Despair.[21][22] Unlike Kazuichi and the rest, he avoided being turned into Ultimate Despair due to his contribution. Thus, Class 77-B's fight with the brainwashed rescue squad troops, including the Former Super High School Level Elite Task Force, began.
Praised by Sonia
Kazuichi came to Nekomaru's aid in fighting against a robot unit of the Future Foundation's Super High School Level Elite Task Force. He sent an army of remote-controlled Mechamaru to defeat the second robot. He immediately sought Sonia's praise and validation. When he felt he had once again been ignored, Sonia earnestly praised Kazuichi's effort with a smile on her face, causing him to blush gleefully.
Confronting Ryota
Later, Kazuichi helped convince Ryota to abandon his plan to brainwash the world. During the confrontation, Ryota expressed his belief that he and the other Remnants of Despair could never be forgiven for allowing Junko to plunge the world into despair. In response, Kazuichi slung his hand over Hajime's shoulder, pointing out how anyone is worthy as a classmate, even a Reserve Course student such as Hajime. Ryota eventually broke down in tears and agreed, stopping the countdown mere seconds before the brainwashing was completed. Kazuichi and the others later came to his side to comfort him.
Claiming themselves as the mastermind behind the Final Killing Game
Kazuichi and the other former Remnants of Despair shouldered the blame for the Final Killing Game by sending a broadcast video to the Future Foundation. They presented themselves in their despair personas and preserved the Future Foundation's credibility and power to rebuild the world. Having accomplished their atonement, Kazuichi and his classmates returned to Jabberwock Island. He was last seen trying to seek Sonia's attention.
Real Fiction[]
- Main article: Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
Kazuichi cosplayed by Tsumugi Shirogane
In Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, it is alleged by the mastermind Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer, that the entire Danganronpa franchise is fictional in-universe; a series of games, anime, and later live-action dramas performed actors. In particular, Tsumugi, who is the Ultimate Cosplayer, claims she is only able to cosplay fictional characters (breaking out into a bright pink rash whenever she tries to cosplay a real person), and the fact she is able to cosplay as the whole cast of Danganronpa characters including Kazuichi Soda is used as evidence to support her claim that all of the cast are fictional. However, due to a number of holes in Tsumugi's story which make her an unreliable narrator, whether or not she was telling the truth is deliberately left up to the player's interpretation; as a result, it is up to the player whether they believe Kazuichi's story within the Danganronpa series was real, or a fictional story written by Team Danganronpa and performed by an actor.[34]
Creation and Development[]

According to the series creator Kazutaka Kodaka, Kazuichi was designed to be a friend with a bad influence on the protagonist. He was further humanized by being made "spineless", a weakness that made the character more likable to Kodaka himself.[35]
Character designer Rui Komatsuzaki stated that Kazuichi was originally designed with a "bad boy" image, coded through his facial structure and shark-like teeth in his early concept. Kodaka then requested that his visuals be based on the late Japanese musician Hide. He was given Hide's characteristic color scheme and a mechanic jumpsuit themed after a brand of clothes Hide used in one of his phases. Kazuichi is a character whose finalized design is almost identical to his early concept.[35]
Yoshimasa Hosoya, Kazuichi's Japanese voice actor, also commented on his character:
- "Kazuichi Sōda is a surprising character. His hardened punk appearance hides a very human Good Dude. The more I voiced him, the more I liked him. I kinda lost it during the recording because the story’s background was a bit too much for me, but Mr. Kodaka's voicing direction allowed me to correct my interpretation of the character, making me notice he was much deeper than I initially thought. Danganronpa 2 is a game full of arrangement that make you go “What the hell?!” just like Sōda, so it was a 10/10 both as a cast member and as a fan."[35]
Name[]
The kanji for Kazuichi (和一) means "peaceful one", the name of a character from one of Kodaka's earlier works he had been wanting to reuse. His surname, Sōda (左右田), is composed of the characters "left and right" and "rice field", purposefully chosen to give the impression that he is constantly lost and confused.[35]
Alternate Fates[]
Island Mode and Ultimate Talent Development Plan exist in two separate alternate universes where Sonia still attends Hope's Peak Academy, but no students are in peril. As they are alternate universes, these events are non-canonical, but because Kazuichi's personality is unchanged, backstory information shared by him in these events is considered questionably or dubiously canonical rather than fully non-canonical.
Free Time Events are also considered somewhat questionably canonical due to the nature of how Free Time Events are accessed (in that some characters' Free Time Events cannot be fully completed during the course of the canon game storyline due to limitations on the number of interactions you can have with them during one playthrough, and thus can only be accessed after they have canonically died either through a second playthrough or via Island Mode). However, due to Free Time Events being largely experienced during the canon game storyline, Free Time Events are more grounded in canon than Island Mode and Ultimate Talent Development Plan and are largely considered canon by the majority of players.
Appearance[]

Kazuichi has a slim build, shaggy, shoulder-length hair dyed hot pink with a little braid on the left side. He has a large tuft of hair that he hides under a dark gray beanie with a white band on the bottom right. He has thin eyes with hot-pink prescription color contacts on them at all times.[36] He has thin, pronounced eyebrows that nearly touch his hairline, as well as sharp, shark-like teeth. He also wears earrings stylized after screws; the right one has a plus-sign head, while the left has a minus-sign head.
During the Killing School Trip, he wears a white shirt hidden underneath his work clothes: a yellow-green jumpsuit with a dark brown streak on the sides reaching his ankles. He rolls up his right sleeve to his elbow and the left sleeve up to his forearm. It has several pockets and is the type of clothes that can be worn without worrying about minor stains, which is why Kazuichi never washes it.[36][37] He accessorizes his jumpsuit with two badges on his left front pocket: one featuring a screw logo, and the other depicting a screwdriver and nail. The block and bolt logos of his former high school, Tōshima Industry High School, are displayed on the front right and back of his jumpsuit, and the yellow version of the bolt on his right thigh pocket. It has a zipper down the front and a mini light clipped to the right waist. In his official design sketch, he is seen carrying the traditional Soda family screwdriver, with the family kanji imprinted on its brown handle. He wears bright yellow sneakers that have the block Tōshima Industry High School logo on their back, as well as white laces.
During his high school years, he wears a similar jumpsuit, but blue, and instead of a beanie, he wears a cap. On his yellow-green jumpsuit, there are two pockets on his thighs, whilst he has another pocket on his chest on the right.
As an Ultimate Despair, he wears a yellow jumper, black gloves, and a utility belt. He lets his hair loose without a headwear and partially unzips his jumper, revealing his white shirt.
His swimsuit in Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp consists of bright green swim trunks secured with a white drawstring. He retains his beanie alongside the block and bolt symbols of his former high school adorning his trunks.
Personality[]
General Behavior[]
Kazuichi is a carefree character, aptly described by Hajime as a "confident, happy-go-lucky guy who gets a little carried away sometimes."[14] He is among the most notably excited students upon arriving at Jabberwock Island, so over the moon that he is willing to look past the strange situation they are in.[28] Even after the school trip turned deadly, he refuses to give up his tropical paradise fantasy by enacting what the group was supposed to do, such as enjoying coconuts with friends and fantasizing about the group splashing around the private beach together. He tends to brag and be self-serving,[38] like showing up late to the rendezvous he arranged for him and Hajime unapologetically. He can act rather clingy and whiny, even threatening Hajime to bug him further if he refuses to come along as a plus one to his mischief.[39] Sometimes, he does things out of compassion, though it often comes with childish and shallow ulterior motives. For example, he builds a monitor to let his classmates use for a gaming session, while also earning bragging rights.[16] Noticing how often Chiaki plays the arcade machine in the hotel lobby, he offers to fix a portable game console he found in Electric Avenue for her, albeit somewhat forcefully, pleading with her to accept his gracious offering.[40] He arranges Nagito's apprehension plan for the group's best interests, yet refuses to let anyone meddle with the positions he has set in stone.[41]
| “ | Kazuichi prides himself on his flashy appearance and cool demeanor, which makes it all the more surprising that he's actually a coward. Even minor incidents are enough to set him off and send him spiraling into a full-blown panic attack.
|
” |

Despite his intimidating appearance and carefree attitude, Kazuichi is a coward at heart. It has been a core trait of his growing up, which caused him to be a prominent bullying victim.[14] Though his "tough punk" facade has pulled him out of that situation, it continues to crack almost constantly. He is jumpy, easily scared, pessimistic, and loves to complain about every minor inconvenience.[43][44] He is fretful and often blurts out the worst-case scenarios, which only worsen his anxiety.[45] His mood and confidence can go from sky-high to rock-bottom in a matter of seconds.[13][46] Naturally, he has a great fear of dying on the island, which causes him stress and frequent, wistful thoughts of running away from anything that might endanger his life. He cowers in fear at the prospect of participating in investigations and class trials, voicing his concern frequently in hopes that someone will help him move forward.[47] He is a poor liar, often contradicting himself in the process.[48] While he is a genius with machinery, he appears to be a bit slow-witted otherwise. Nevertheless, he proactively participates in trials by throwing more often than not incorrect assumptions, which still benefit the group by eliminating false leads. His cowardice incites Hiyoko's frequent mocking, who calls him out as someone who dresses flashy to stand out and hides his true "loser" self.[49] He constantly carries a wrench as emotional support and complains when the Imposter confiscates it from him during the all-night party.[50]
| “ | Nagito's a pain in the ass, but is there anything we can do about Kazuichi's idiocy...? He doubts everyone so easily and never apologizes for it... Well, I guess I'm used to it...
|
” |
Alongside his cowardice, Kazuichi also struggles with trust issues and believes that humans are "creatures that betray each other."[13] He is quick to lose trust in others, such as Monomi, whom he initially finds adorable but eventually cannot bring himself to trust, believing her true allegiance lies with Monokuma.[28][51] He credits someone as "creepy" and "insane" as Nagito as a prime example of why it is difficult for him to trust other humans.[52] He greatly dislikes and finds him to be extremely dangerous if left alone, hence why he masterminds Nagito's apprehension on two separate occasions.[53] Although he understands the basic principle behind Nagito's obsession with hope, this only deepens his distaste for him.[54] Kazuichi, in fact, already begins to dislike Nagito ever since his time at Hope's Peak. He claims that bad things happen to him whenever Nagito is around, as he is a frequent victim of his luck cycle.[15][16]
Kazuichi also believes that Fuyuhiko is planning to commit murder early on, yet he is bold enough to get into frequent verbal fights, as Fuyuhiko doesn't have his yakuza clan backing him up.[55] After the comatose students are resurrected by Hajime, Kazuichi appears to be on better terms with Fuyuhiko, and especially with Nagito. He patiently waits for Nagito, who is the last to wake up. He greets him before boarding the boat, and overall seems friendlier toward him, even teasing him by asking if he was dreaming about pretty girls, but becomes visibly uncomfortable when Nagito hugs him.[33]
Kazuichi rekindles such paranoia upon witnessing Mikan's drastic personality change during the third class trial. He becomes susceptible to Nagito's claim that the fact Hajime can't remember his own Ultimate talent warrants suspicion of him being a traitor. He starts doubting him from thereon, despite having claimed him as his "soul brother" previously.[56][57] Initially, he keeps his doubts to himself, but after Nagito calls him out, he openly admits them and frequently makes jabs about the possibility of Hajime being the traitor.[58] Being trapped and slowly starved to death in the Funhouse furthers his distrust, leading him to accuse Hajime of being complicit in the group's torture without any evidence whatsoever.[59] Although Kazuichi makes up with Hajime after learning that he's a Reserve Course student, he never properly apologizes to Hajime in the main storyline. Only in his final Free Time Event, he shows remorse for his inability to fully trust Hajime, an act of betrayal as he says, and even asks Hajime to punch him to settle things for good. He reveals that he hates himself for being too weak to trust others more than the betrayal itself. He wants to trust his friends unconditionally, while still giving them the benefit of the doubt if they act suspiciously. He also reveals that he has self-esteem issues, saying that his appearance was chosen for the sake of his image, not because he particularly likes it. He finds the newfound attention from the bad crowd who used to bully him and "hot girls" to be frightening.[14] They resume their friendship even after Hajime and Izuru have merged into one person.[60] In his Island Mode ending, Kazuichi calls Hajime his partner, promises to let him ride everything he invents, and shows genuine appreciation for his companionship.[46]
Despite having cowardly, distrustful, and self-serving tendencies, Kazuichi is always willing to cooperate during the killing game. He teams up with Nekomaru after the first class trial to subdue Nagito and prevent him from further harming the group, albeit keeping it hidden from everyone else and neglecting the possibility that he might be starving Nagito to death. His main contributions to the group often take the form of his mechanical expertise, which greatly helped the group solve the fourth case. He also uses his talent to build a video chat device during the Despair Disease outbreak and Minimaru after the fourth class trial to boost morale.
He often plays the "straight man" among his classmates, driven less by composure than by fear and a strong instinct for self-preservation.[61] He yells at Akane a lot to take the killing game more seriously, especially since her cluelessness in class trials and reckless, impulsive behavior could endanger her own life.[62] He also shows great distress after Fuyuhiko sustains injuries both from interfering with Peko's execution and from attempting harakiri to atone for his past behavior, which included quarreling with Kazuichi. He helps escort him back to the hospital, defends him from Hiyoko's ruthless comments, and forbids him from slicing his stomach again whilst the two argue during a class trial.[63] He also gets along with Chiaki, though he often yells at her whenever she does things out of pocket.[64] He eventually trusts Chiaki enough to lure Nagito into the hotel lobby, as he refuses to assign Sonia to such a role, much to her dismay.[65] He also whines about losing to her in a game match despite asking her to go all out on an amateur like him.[40]
Another memorable trait of Kazuichi is his perversion toward girls, something that he vehemently denies, yet his behavior proves otherwise. He is dirty-minded and frequently blurts them out aloud, often unintentionally. When he does, he either immediately regrets it or tries to deflect the blame, usually onto Hajime.[66] He has this habit as he, unlike Teruteru, who openly embraces his lewdness, lacks confidence and is oddly impressed by Teruteru's comfort in openly expressing such thoughts.[67] While attending Hope's Peak, the two bond over their shared perverted and paranoid traits.[21] He complains about the killing game endangering his life as much as it strips away his tropical fantasy of being surrounded by attractive girls.[4][68] In Island Mode, Kazuichi mentions that he kept a porn collection in his room, only for it to be discovered and burned by his mother.[5]
Kazuichi's pervertedness stems from typical teenage hormones to a genuine yet questionable fascination. He apparently likes the idea of undressing a girl and checking out her bone structure, thinking it's similar to dismantling machines. He seems to think it's normal, though Hajime is weirded out by this and calls it a fetish.[69] His dirty curiosity repeatedly outweighs his fear of being branded a pervert, leading him to infiltrate events that are off-limits to him, often dragging Hajime along as cover. His childish streak shows most in his nosy, almost playground-level curiosity about which girls his male classmates are 'targeting,'[4] even in the middle of serious situations like class trials. If a boy and girl team up to disprove his theory, his knee-jerk response is to tease or accuse them of having a crush on each other.[70] Even a simple hangout is enough for Kazuichi to jump to conclusions about the two engaging in something sexual.[71]
In contrast to his creepy behavior toward girls, Kazuichi dislikes physical contact from other men, such as when the Imposter posing as Byakuya conducts a thorough body examination on him. He is also put off by men displaying "feminine" traits, such as Nekomaru occasionally sulking or having a sensitive heart that clashes with his muscular appearance.[72] In Island Mode, Kazuichi feels it's unbecoming for him and Hajime, as fellow men, to do supposedly couple activities alone, often reacting with either disinterest or discomfort.[73] However, if Hajime offers to take their clothes off at the beach, Kazuichi screams in excitement, only to immediately think it's a weird reaction to have.[68] His Shot Through the Heart event is portrayed ambiguously akin to a love confession, where he hesitates to share a secret with Hajime, fearing it's "too abnormal." However, if Hajime chooses the best response and promises not to make fun of him, Kazuichi comically reveals that he's actually attracted to tanks.[74] He also refers to their outings as "man-dates", and if Hajime chooses the worst date option, Kazuichi claims that he would have ended it early "if [he] was a girl."[75]
Interests[]
Kazuichi's pervertedness becomes a full-blown obsession when it comes to his crush Sonia. His attraction is shown to be rather shallow, even to a degree of objectification, as Sonia checks all the marks of the type of girl he has dreamed of dating since childhood, which include "a hot blonde" with the added bonus of her being a "purebred princess."[76] In order to please her and gain what little attention she gives him, he seizes every moment he can get to praise her. From her fair skin, regal status,[76] voice,[77] to her intellect and ideas,[78] and even her homeland's castle he has no actual knowledge of it.[79] He allows Sonia to butcher Japanese proverbs from time to time and can get upset when others try to correct her.[80] Kazuichi also pretends to act tough in Sonia's presence, though by the end of the killing game, he is willing to admit to her and everyone else that he's scared of the unknown future.[81] He is very obedient to her commands, even when he dislikes some of them, and views her as someone above everyone else in the group.[82] As such, he speaks in a very polite manner exclusively to her, notably calling her "Miss Sonia" in the English dub. In the original Japanese, not only he maintains a polite speech, he consistently addresses her as "Sonia-san", rather than using "omae" and dropping any honorifics as he does with others. Despite Sonia clearly showing no romantic interest in him and even clear discomfort, Kazuichi continues his wild goose chase regardless through his vain attempts at impressing her.[83] Even Hajime wishes he would give up his obsession by the end of the killing game.[84]
Despite the amount of "respect" he gives Sonia, Kazuichi constantly comments about her body and appearance in a rather gross fashion. He fantasizes about seeing her in a bikini, believing that, as a foreigner, she possesses a "pure, innocent, mythical fantasy" body.[85] He also imagines her in highly suggestive situations and even expresses jealousy toward Monokuma for having access to surveil her private activities.[86][87] Kazuichi becomes genuinely shocked and even incredulous whenever Sonia deviates from his "purebred princess" fantasy, such as when she shows bizarre interests in the occult and serial killers, ambiguously implying that she's no longer a virgin, or farting like any other human being.[88][89]
In line with his obsession with Sonia, Kazuichi goes out of his way to spare her from getting into any dangerous situations, even at the expense of her own wishes.[90] At times, this causes him to underestimate her, making him sound unintentionally condescending.[91] Due to Kazuichi's intrusive behavior toward her, Sonia grows to heavily dislike his advances. She actively avoids him, labels him as her stalker,[92] and expresses her disappointment upon learning that Kazuichi can't be Nekomaru's killer.[93] Such understandably hostile treatment from Sonia, however, does not sour his opinion of her; in fact, he even grows to enjoy being humiliated by her.[94] Although Sonia initially ignores Kazuichi's attempts to impress her during the fourth trial, and even yells at him to stay silent so as not to disrupt the proceedings, she later comes to appreciate his active participation. By the conclusion of the Final Killing Game, she even praises his efforts in destroying an army of robots.[60]
Kazuichi is also a very jealous person, which is the main reason he engages in a one-sided romantic rivalry with Gundham, who is close to Sonia.[95] Not only does he become angry whenever he sees Gundham interact with Sonia, but he also finds Gundham irritating due to his long-winded speeches and his hamsters being a huge magnet for attracting Sonia to him.[96][97] Even after Gundham's avatar death, their relationship remains indifferent at best, as the only person Kazuichi consistently expresses a desire to honor is Nekomaru, Gundham's victim, and he disregards Gundham's principle of never giving up on living, which upsets Sonia.[98] However, while attending Hope's Peak, their relationship appears slightly better, with Kazuichi often attempting to play with Gundham's hamsters.[17] He also believes that Gundham is someone who knows how to get things done when he needs to.[24]

Other than obsessing over Sonia, Kazuichi is passionate about all things mechanical. Being surrounded by them gives him an inexplicable sense of happiness and doubles his urge to disassemble them. He likens such obsession to wanting to take off a "hot chick's" clothes to study "her bone structure," not realizing that this is a perverted thought and abnormal to anyone but himself.[69] Multiple instances include taking his first steps at the Electric Avenue on the third island and upon first meeting Mechamaru, whom he eagerly asks to disassemble to study his functions. He doesn't mind working with frames or electrical equipment, but what really inspires him is mechanical disassembly, and he feels restless if too many days pass without it. He'll do it to anything: go-karts, RC toys, even things without engines, like a baby carriage or the alarm clock in his cottage, he can turn into a time bomb at any time.[30][14] He can feel conflicted, however, thinking he shouldn't be allowed to feel so excited amidst the killing game.[40] When Kazuichi gets to disassemble Mechamaru, he is very hesitant at first, but eventually pushes through as the effort helps solve his murder.[99]
Above all else, Kazuichi loves tinkering with, modifying, and inventing vehicles, drawn by what he calls "the feeling of an engine running" and their "cool" exterior. Despite his motion sickness preventing him from using most of his own creations, it does not deter his passion. In fact, many of the things he fixes or modifies somehow end up becoming some form of vehicle.[30] One time, he considers adding pedals to the airplanes and ships on Jabberwock Island, even entertaining the idea of turning one into a swan-shaped pedal boat to escape the island.[13] At home, he is in the process of creating a bike with a top speed of 585mph per his calculations. He is very eager to continue it, fully knowing it is street illegal and that he cannot even use it.[30] On top of bikes, he dreams of building rocket ships, dubbing it "the very top of the vehicle food chain" thanks to their unmatched size and speed.[13][46] In Island Mode, Kazuichi reveals he read machine manuals and is obsessed with the idea of turning the Jabberwock Statue into a walking fortress.[5][100] His passion for vehicles and mechanical disassembly extends to military-grade machines, including tanks and fighter jets.[101]
Talent and Abilities[]
Ultimate Mechanic[]

Kazuichi has tinkered with and studied machines all his life, thanks to being the primary mechanic of his family's bike shop. He grew to be the household genius, demonstrated by his capability of fixing anything: bikes, cars, kids' toys, household appliances, you name it.[4] It is always not smooth-sailing, however, especially when one factors his habit of taking things apart and putting them back together.[30] Kazuichi often got yelled at for modifying various things at school or at home. His greatest invention, for example, was a field-chalking machine for the school's soccer pitch, which he modified by attaching it to an engine. It caused the machine to escape through the school entrance at full speed without curving or stopping.[13]
Kazuichi can deliver accurate status reports upon closer examination of any machines. For instance, he discovers how it is beyond impossible to repair the Jabberwock Island airplanes as their engines have been completely removed. He notes that had they simply broken, he would have been able to fix them.[28] In the Funhouse, he determines that Nekomaru's killer had tampered with the elevator's control panel by malfunctioning the safety device. He fixes it in no time, using only a multi-tool.[99] Later, he examines the apparent bomb setup by Nagito in the Plushy Factory on the final island and deduces that it is virtually impossible to disarm: the bombs are rigged so that when the engine stops running, the insulator is blown off, triggering the explosion.[41]
He achieves several impressive feats during the killing game, one of which is modifying an old surveillance camera for household use into a long-distance video chat device. He swapped the cameras between the two existing sets, resulting in each monitor displaying the footage from the other camera. To extend their limited communication range, he reengineered the system to broadcast over a wider area. Despite the improvements, the signal still couldn't reach from the hospital to the motel directly. He mitigated this problem by setting up one of the units at the music venue, allowing the hospital and motel team to communicate without physical contact.[40] He also had the knowledge that each unit manages its broadcast based on a specific number, meaning that unless one brings the same model camera or monitor, no one could interfere with the signal. This is vital to figure out how and from where Mikan tampered with the camera units during the third class trial.[29]
Kazuichi's affinity for disassembly allows him to perform an "autopsy" on Mechamaru, where he determines the fatal damage to have been taken to his head. Despite being a savant, Kazuichi is not afraid to admit that without proper parts and tools, his work might be limited, delayed, or even impossible to complete. As such, he reluctantly had to salvage parts from Mechamaru's body to repair the door to the Strawberry Hall.[99] He also used them to build Minimaru much later.[41]

Skilled Inventor[]
Minimaru
Other than tinkering with and fixing machines, Kazuichi possesses the creative and technical skills required to be a master inventor. His most notable inventions include Minimaru, a small, lifelike representation of Nekomaru he swiftly built in one night using Mechamaru's undamaged components. It is equipped with Nekomaru's catchphrases, the ability to tell time, and provide the user with massages for sore muscles and pressure points.[41] At the climax of the Final Killing Game, Kazuichi upgrades the Minimarus into numerous suicide bombers capable of taking down a Future Foundation robot unit.[60]
A gigantic invention
Another known invention of Kazuichi is a gigantic, unidentifiable machine in which he is so invested that he skips class at the beginning of his freshman year.[15] During his tenure as an Ultimate Despair, he can be seen overseeing the production of a giant Monokuma reminiscent of the Big Bang Monokuma.[26]

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair:
Prologue:
- "Name's Kazuichi Soda. I'm the Ultimate Mechanic. Nice to meet ya."
- "I-It's impossible... Why is something impossible happening...?"
Chapter 1:
- "As long as I lock myself in my room, there won't be any problems!"
- "Seriously, if we're on a tropical paradise then why are we in this situation in the first place!? Isn't that right? Isn't a vacation supposed to be nothing but lounging around and sipping coconut juice!?"
- "Miss Sonia is a hot blonde princess! There's a sharp distinction between her and you punks!"
- "Don't get distracted! Our lives are at stake, you know!"
- "You're totally right... What we need to do right now...is do our best...! If we do our best...it's definitely going to pay off, right?"
Chapter 2:
- "Awesome! Totally awesome! Splashing around at such a gorgeous beach is really the best!"
- "Hey, there's no way you guys don't know! Don't just show up and tell some lousy lies!"
- "Anyway, let's cherish the coincidence that brought us together! So is it okay if we join in too?" (to Mikan and Ibuki)
- "Don't worry! Even at its worst, it won't turn into a live action drama!" (to Hajime)
- "I mean it, I promise I'll give it my all to serve you so everyone has fun!"
- "I'm not mentally prepared yet... Like, I don't think I'll ever be..."
- "It's not cute to see an old guy sulk..."
- "D-Don't blame Miss Sonia! It's just a difference between cultures... A culture shock, y'know!?"
- " If you were aware of that from the start, you should've done something about it!"
- "Th-There's no need to hesitate! No matter how you look at it, Peko's the killer!"
- "Well, that's obvious! You're not a tool, you're a friggin' human being!"
- "H-Hold on! Don't act like our loss has been decided yet!" (to Pek])
- "I know you hate our guts but... If you listen to Peko, we're all gonna die!"
Chapter 3:
- "Do you just forget everything that happens when you eat?"
- "Argh, don't say stupid things! I'm the Ultimate Mechanic, you know! Of course I'm happy when I'm surrounded by machines! Hot damn, I wanna take them apart! I wanna dismantle them and look inside! That's how I usually think, right? But, I know now's not the time for me to do something like that...and that's why I feel so conflicted."
- "Hell yeah! It's like, if you have the hots for a chick, you wanna take off her clothes, right? And you wanna check out her bone structure, right? Like her ribs or where parts of her bones stick out, right!?"
- "Hajime, my eyes are open now, thanks to you! All right! Let's go run together! Let's go! To our horizon!"
- "Okay then, let's go my friend! Let's run to our goal!"
- "Horizons...are beautiful things...that you keep chasing after, right...probably...? Soooooo...what exactly is a "horizon" anyway?"
- "You're like the queen of the arcade machine."
- "Hold on, hold on! Who do you think I am!? I'll definitely fix it up till it's like brand new! Then when it's all fixed, I'll give it to you! Just watch! I'll completely fix it up, and I'll make you say thank you with tears running down your face!"
- "Let's run, Miss Sonia! It'd be terrible if you caught the lowly disease of the common folks!"
- "Don't lump hamsters and teenage boys together!" (to Gundham)
- "Yeah, that's right man... There's no way we're gonna lose together here, you know? Cause if that happens...then Monokuma gets what he wants!"
- "Looks like it's time for the Ultimate Mechanic to shine."
- "What a wicked way of backing us into a wall... Is this his professional skill...!?"
- "Apologize to Miss Sonia! And me! However, you're not allowed to slice open your stomach this time!"
- "Even quick work has limits!"
- "Seriously, just shut up already! Shut up forever!" (to Nagito)
- "Don't go doubting Miss Sonia, you cretin! I'll put you and your hamsters six feet under!"
- "Wh-What the heck...? This isn't a comic book, you know...!"
Chapter 4:
- "Even if we go to the the new island...it's not like we're gonna find a way to escape this place, right?"
- "Miss Sonia is a 100% pure princess who lives in a 100% pure castle!"
- "I-I'm gonna believe you this time, so you better be telling the truth!"
- "I-Idiot! I didn't get dumped! Why would I get dumped!? In fact, I'm really popular!"
- "The truth is we don't know anything about you, so it's not my fault if I don't trust you..."
- "Like that matters! It's not like I know the *real* you! Just like how...we didn't know anything about Mikan..."
- "The possibility isn't zero... I do think that it's extremely close to zero but... ...It's never gonna be zero, no matter what."
- "This chick... Even the inside of her head is full of drool...!"
- "The longer you walk, the more calories you burn! So obviously we're more tired than you guys...!"
- "I-I don't wanna die...in a place like this..."
- "...Whatever man, let's just eat! Eating should come first right now!"
- "I know I said I wanted to see his insides, but...not like this! This is just too much!"
- "We've come so far... There's no way I can get sentimental at a time like this...! I feel awful for Nekomaru, but this is necessary if we're gonna find out the truth behind this case...!"
- "Just so you all know, my repairs are perfect!"
- "It's annoying but...if Miss Sonia is going, there's no way I'm not gonna go... Argh, but it's so damn annoying!"
- "...Man, not only does that make perfect sense, but Miss Sonia's beautiful voice is just so soothing!"
- "Give it ten years before you argue with Miss Sonia!"
- "Aw! Your precious hammies don't know? But it's so simple! All righty then... I'll be the one who solves this mystery in a flash! Please watch me, Miss Sonia!"
- "I'll definitely make her watch me! I'm gonna stand out till she notices me!"
- "Isn't that right Miss Sonia!? If I'm a fucking pig, you can say so!"
Chapter 5:
- "...Well, it doesn't matter. I made this to cheer you guys up anyway. And...as long as we have it, we won't forget, you know? About Nekomaru's sacrifice for us... We're standing here today...because of him. So, if we're gonna prevent something like that from ever happening again... I guess we gotta fight too, right!? We can't just keep running away!"
- "Well, it doesn't matter! Stuff is just hard to say sometimes!"
- "I-I don't really get it, but...when Miss Sonia talks like that, my blood starts to boil... ALL RIGHT! I'm getting pumped up! Let's charge our way to that new island!"
- "Who cares!? It's not like he's our friend or anything!"
- "Not really... Like...I feel like I learned stuff...but I also feel like I didn't learn anything..."
- "I mean...you did say earlier...that you definitely can't accept killing... ...Isn't that right? I need your help to stop another killing... And didn't I just say I'm begging you!?"
- "It's not like we want to do this! We're just doing it because Nagito's dangerous... He's planning to kill someone! This is just self-defense!"
- "Yeah, there's only one thing we can do...! ...Pray."
- "That smell was Miss Sonia...? Seriously? I guess princesses...you know... do that, too... My mind is blown..."
- "Wh-What do you mean, "something"?! He's making us kill each other, you know!? What could be worse than that!?"
- "Dammit...this dangerous place is the reason all this messed up stuff is happening... Leaving guns out in the open is totally dangerous! Seriously, they gotta take better care of these!"
- "Why you can't believe it!? The guy who's making us do all this is the one saying it, you know!? That's why...I'll definitely survive... If we can really go home after we deal with this Class Trial... I'll definitely find out who the killer is, no matter what! Even if I have to pull out all the stops!"
- "Why do you always side with Hajime...!? Do you have a crush on him or something!?"
- "That's our Miss Sonia! You have such an amazingly high intellect! All righty then, let's think about this based on what Miss Sonia thinks! Is that okay, Miss Sonia?"
- "B-But...it's just as Monokuma said... We've been betrayed over and over again so far, so... This might also be the same... Calling this a suicide takes too much for granted, and it's too convenient..."
- "A blushing Miss Sonia is freaking awesome!!!"
- "Then...it's okay to end it here, huh? That means we're done with this last Class Trial... And we can leave this island, right? It's okay to reach such a happy ending, right!?"
- "This is friggin' annoying... But if you guys say you're doing it, there's no way I'm gonna back out!"
- "I guess the lasting he could believe in was his own his talent..."
- "By finding out who the traitor is, our hopes will shine even brighter by overcoming that despair... ...That's something he'd say."
- "A-Are you telling us to trust his luck? Are you telling us to entrust our lives to that bastard!?"
- "That bastard Nagito...he was screwed up till the very end. What was that "Praise me" crap...? After all the crap he put us through, there's no way we'd ever do that!"
Chapter 6:
- "I don't care if we don't know anymore... If we can just go back to our normal lives, I'm fine... Hey, we can go home when this is over, right!? We can finally get off this damn island, right!?"
- "Then...let's get this over with and go home..."
- "Miss Soniaaa! Please don't leave me! I'll be in danger if I'm left alone!"
- "I mean, unrealistic things might happen in real life from time to time, but... There's no way this is real! It's more impossible than a notebook that kills people just by writing in it!"
- "If this is a game...are my words being displayed in a text window right now!? That's stupid! There's no way that's even possible!"
- "A-As expected of Miss Sonia! Your knowledge of state-sanctioned torture is amaaaazing!"
- "D-Don't be ridiculous! If I stay in this screwed up world any longer, I'm seriously gonna snap!"
- "Just kill him right now! Then this nightmare can finally end!"
- "Because we had that goal... We were able to endure those killings..."
- "Don't you want to go back home!? I don't care if you want to stay here but don't drag us into it!"
- "E-Even a monster like her has to follow the rules of the school trip!?"
- "You still came here when you knew we had no choice of winning?"
- "W-We still have to fight...? I...I thought we finally reached the end...!"
- "W-We were forced to solve puzzles and riddles...just so you could show it off to the Future Foundation?"
- "Man...this sure is getting annoying again... But...if you're saying you're gonna do it, there's no way I can back out now... If I don't have any place to go back to, I should at least protect this place no matter what!"
- "...I didn't think it would end this easily."
- "...People can't change that easily, y'know!"
- "Hey! I'll never forget you guys, or others! You guys better remember me, too! My name is...Kazuichi Soda!"
- "We're on a tropical island, y'know? Surrounded by a blue sea, y'know? And there's plenty of ladies here, too. So why do we have to be involved in all this killing nonsense?"
- "In fact...to tell you the truth, I was really excited when we first arrived at this island. Everyone here has pretty colorful personalities, but they all seem like interesting people... I was really looking forward to enjoying my youthful days here... ...Until all this crap happened."
- "Comrades, huh...? Hehe...that sounds pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to working with ya, comrade!"
- "Disassemble, reassemble, see how it goes... Disassemble, reassemble, see how it goes... Doing that over and over gets my brain moving!"
- "...Don't you think rockets are amazing!? They're the biggest and the fastest! They're at the very top of the vehicle food chain! But still...there's just one thing I'm worried about. No matter how hard I work to make such an awesome machine... There's no way I can give a girl a ride in one..."
- "...All right, let's get pumped up and look for a way to escape!"
- "Humans are creatures that betray each other, y'know..."
- "If you don't, my mind won't be settled! It's like I feel lost or something... You believe in me, but I can't believe in you at all... It's like...I betrayed you or something."
- "I was always...a weak, cowardly kid. All I ever did was study and tinker with machines. So...I always believed that everyone who talked to me was a nice person. So even if I was betrayed or lied to, I always believed they had a good reason for it. That's what I always believed...all because I was too scared to admit it."
- "...Thanks. Because of you, I understand now. What I really hated all along wasn't being betrayed. I hated myself for being too weak to believe in others. Whatever happens, I'll believe in you. That...is what being friends is all about. Let's definitely get out of here. All of us. But...it'll be different if you act suspicious. Even if you're my friend, I'll doubt you if you're suspicious."
- "Hell no! I didn't come all the way to a tropical island just to study in a library!"
- "Movies are all about the action anyway!"
- "So in the end there's always a threeway fight between the main character, the bad guy, and my bladder."
- "Real men should shut up and embrace the salt!"
- "The tank, huh. It's soooo amazing, isn't it? Man, it's sweet. It's huge, it's bulky, and I dunno how to say this, but I kinda want to pet it. I might even be able to drive it if I put a little effort into it... Man, I'm losing my mind here... Well, personally, I'd rather disassemble it than drive it! Man... Military hardware is awesome..."
- "Man, fighter jets are awesome... After all, they have jet engines... I wonder how hot they get... One day, I wanna get close enough to hear it roar! Well, I don't want to ride one, of course. But maaaaaan, I want to disassemble one..."
- "After looking at all this treasure piled up in front of me... I'll never go back home! I'm gonna disassemble parts and put engines together to my heart's content!"
- "You know, after everything that's happened on this island... I feel like I've been reborn or something. I feel like I can do anything... There's a lot of stuff I wanna do..."
- "Well, yeah, um, I'd like to have three kids, and I wanna enjoy making them, too... But I don't even have a partner to do that with, yet..."
- "I gotta study a lot... Right now, I don't have enough knowledge or skill to do that yet. But thinking about what'll happen down the road is exciting. I can't sit still for even one second. I've never thought about the future and felt excited about it before... Until I met you... That way, from now on... You're gonna ride shotgun with me forever!"
- "...Just watch, Hajime. With these hands of mine, I'll definitely stand on top of the vehicle food chain. From now on, I look forward to workin' with you, partner!"
Ultimate Talent Development Plan:
- "Because...y'know...right now is the best time of our lives, yeah? All our classmates are crazy interesting, all the girls are super hot... Getting all hyper over school events and doing a bunch of stupid crap... We're all having fun." (To Fuyuhiko)
Danganronpa S Development Mode:
- "I think I just realized why I can't handle you. You don't even try to see others as equals. It's creepy, man! Not to mention uncomfortable. I mean, not that I'm one to talk."
- "All you ever do is put us all on a damn pedestal! It feels like you're talking to some fake version of me. Those compliments just fall totally flat."
- "Just listen to me! I grew up tinkering with machines since I was even younger than you. So of *course* I'd have a little more knowledge than you, right? It has nothing to do with one of us being better than the other--it all comes down to experience."
- "Being liked at a surface level is pointless. That won't get you anywhere."
- "Even kids have to deal with stressful stuff."
- "Even if you are hot, you're so crass the beauty gauge goes all the way back around to zero!"
- "Miss Sonia... Just you wait! I'll build a vehicle just for you... ...so that you can get anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye!"
- "I already have my own goddess! There's only one Sonia in this world... And nobody can take her place!"
- "Miss Sonia stands at the top of my world! Compared to her, I basically hate everyone else! But again, that's all relatively speaking!"
- "Never too old to do something cool with friends."
- "Nah, man. I know it feels like crap doing stuff you aren't into to make people like you."
Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School/Despair Arc:
- "Striking cool poses isn't helping." (To Chisa and Ibuki)
- "When he's involved, nothing good ever happens to me!"
- "Sonia, you're... Sonia Angel Nevermind!"
- "If you order it, I'll carry anything, anywhere!"
- "Tanaka's a man who can get stuff done when he needs to."
